No Region Code for HD DVD
Administrator

According to EnGadget, there has been announcements that the new HD DVD will not have regional codes.
This is a welcome development, and is a huge consumer convenience. If you recall, the DVD standards incorporate a region code which essentially means that if you buy a DVD in the US, it might not be playable in Asia, and anything you bought in Asia might be unusable in Japan. However, these codes have since been cracked, and most of the DVD players coming from less known brands or from China essentially will play any DVD, which actually resulted in a disadvantage for the established players.
I am sure there are ways to protect intellectual property without limiting the choice of the consumer to buy the legal copy anywhere he wants.
