Don’t Major in Minor Things

November 2nd, 2005 by Administrator

Over the course of business, I met many people who lament the fact that their businesses has stayed small. And they tell of friends or people they know who they believe are less capable than them who are reaping better rewards or managing bigger businesses.

Well, first, it does not matter how good you are if you don’t use what you have. You may be more capable, but if you are not going out and using what you have ( which for sure means getting out of your comfort zone, and taking a risk) , you are effectively not going to benefit from it. One of the better quotes I read is that phrase, ” A person who does not read good books has no advantage over one who does not know how to read.”

The other one is that many of the people have to gain more confidence, and have to start majoring in major things. You may do some things well, but if what you choose to do are the inconsequential things, then you won’t move forward.

I remember a story about a good friend who after thirty five years of loyal service have now retired. Despite over 35 years of service, the most he was able to be was to be the branch manager of the bank. Everybody says he was a good and intelligent man. In fact, he was so good, that he was ready to help everybody in their job.

If the tellers were busy, he would go ahead to the tellers to help them count the money. He makes his own coffee, and even helps the staff clean the branch office. He was always ready with a helping hand.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comThe point is he is a branch manager, and unfortunately while there is something to be commended on a manager willing to do a janitor, a clerk, or a teller’s job, the point is first and foremost, you are expected to do a manager’s job because you are a manager, and you are being paid as a manager. There is no value if you spend your time doing something ( even if you do it better) that somebody getting half or a third your paycheck can do.

At the end, you not only have to focus on the job well, but make sure that you have to continually expand your sphere of challenge, and get out of your comfort zone. Start being ready to focus on bigger things.

A business, ( and life) is a gamble. And you can not get giant size rewards by making dwarf size bets. I am not advocating people to throw caution on the wind, but there is also something in people that says you have to take reasonable risks in whatever you do to move forward.

Try to stretch what you know into things that will help you move forward. Don’t spend your time majoring in minor things. Harness your confidence, and know that you are meant for and capable of bigger things. Believe me when I say that it takes as much time and ability to run a 10 people operation than a 50 people one. So why not take a cautious bet and prepare for bigger things?

Now here is where we differ. I would be that bank mgr. I beleive that people are more important than growing my business. But that is just me and my way thru life.

    Bubba,

Thanks. I would like to comment that there is nothing wrong with that bank manager, and they are our family friends.

but it is important to know that we are the result of our choice, and if you think your happiness is on bigger things rather than the satisfaction of being a genial bank manager, then you have to make that choice and not regret it afterwards.

Many people regret that they choose their comfort zone too much and as a result, accomplish less, and lamentthat fact.
