The Clueless Messenger

We all have a role to play in a business. I have always believe that the person who not only does his job well, but understands well the role he plays, and why he is playing it will go further than the person who merely ‘does’ his job and does not care much of anything else. IN the businessworld, there are people who go through the ropes to do their job ( as instructed), but is clueless to anything else, and probably does not care. Sometimes, obeying the letter of instruction, and probably misunderstanding anything else can not only be detrimental, but can also be hilarious. Here is an extreme story to illustrate;
A few hundred years ago, a prison guard was asked to escort a convict to another town. Knowing that the person was not too intelligent, he was given a checklist to make sure he brings everything when he arrives for which he is supposed to check everyday. When he arrives to the next town, he was supposed to make sure that the following persons and items were intact:
- the prison guard
- the convict
- the official turnover documents
- the sword
- the bag
In route, the convict started to scheme to escape, and was successful in getting the guard drank one night. As the guard lay sleeping, he hastily unlocked his handcuffs, change clothes with the guard, and then stealthily slipped away.
The next morning, the guard woke up, and not knowing what happened, started to go over his checklist before starting again on his journey. He looked at the documents. It was there. The sword was there, and his bag was there. He looked at himself in the mirror. The convict ( in prison clothes) looked back at him. Then he started to panic.
” Where was the guard?”

That reminds me of a gal I knew.
Each morning when she looked in the mirror she made a new friend.

I think the point is not that people forget who they are. but that many people just go through a list of things that they do without understanding really what the jobs meant.
