How much you are being Paid
Administrator
I meet again somebody who thinks he would have been willing to work a little bit harder and do a better job if he only was paid ‘right’.
I think it is no secret that the vast majority of us feel we are underpaid, while a small minority would feel we are paid ‘just right’. An even more miniscule amount of people, which is almost a rarity, will honestly say they are overpaid.
It is precisely when you feel that you are underpaid that you should work even harder — well, my advice is work hard irregardless of how you are paid.
If you are paid right, the chances of your getting paid even better will rest upon your ability to generate the results your customer or employer wants.
If you are not paid right, the chances of your being paid ‘right’ will disappear if you don’t. If you are griping and underworking , it will just reinforce your manager’s view that he is in fact overpaying you.
I still believe in the long run, we get what we give, and the most likely outcome of you doing it ‘just right or below what you are paid’ is that you won’t get any more soon.
I think the best way to get a better paying job is simply to be worth more. If your skills and ability allows you to get a thousand dollars, and you don’t improve such skills, you may strike it lucky to get a really generous employer ( and endless search!) who will pay you a thousand two hundred. HOwever, if you concentrate to improve your skills and attitude such that it allows you to charge five thousand dollars, employers will be beating a path to your doorstep if you are willing to go for four thousand eight.
I still think the best path to success, is to focus on how much you can do, rather than how much you are getting. In the same way, they always say delight your customer, maybe you can also think about how to delight your employer.
Don’t compound the initial misfortune of being underpaid ( which most of us experience) from letting it to doing your best.

You’re right though, most of us probably are underpaid. But that doesn’t bother me so much, I knew how much the job paid before I took it, the problem I have is that my boss thinks I should be grateful for it… and I don’t see why, when I’m doing a good job, I should have to be gratefull to get paid peanuts. You can have my work, but not my gratitude I suppose.

You have to balance the amount of work piled on you with your personal sanity. It doesn’t make sense to kill yourself to keep pace with arbitrary deadlines. Do whatever you feel comfortable with and don’t push yourself too hard. Also, you need to recognize the implications of working overtime might have on your family, friends and personal life.
The company I work for could easily double it’s work force and still have tons of work for everybody. I have a ton of work on my plate and no end in sight. It’s not exactly the best situation, but I get paid okay. The problem is that management has no clue about how much work goes into my everyday job tasks. It’s hard to raise your salary without impressing upon your management about this.

I am very sorry, I have no comment here. I am unemployed. (Just emphasizing the other side of the issue.)

It’s just like saying, “Stove, giving me fire, then I’ll put in wood” or “Teacher, give me a good grade, then I’ll study harder”. The world never works that way. Giving is the beginning of receiving.
