Knowledge Revolution Gems

December 14th, 2005 by Administrator

Newsweek cover Knowledge RevolutionHere are some great excerpts from Newsweek 2006 special Issue, the Knowledge Revolution.

1. Given the ease with which capital can move to the smartest, most efficient, most reliable work force, having more skilled and capable workers than the next country becomes essential for attracting and holding the best jobs for the longest time. - Tom Friedman, author of “The World is flat: A Brief History of the Twenty First Century”.

2. The Popular Idea that America is one step smarter and more sophisticated than its rivals is a dangerous myth …. the United States not only has a deficit on commodities and cheap manufactured goods, it also has a deficit on agricultural products and high tech products…. From a surplus of $30 billion in 1998, the high tech trade currently runs at a deficit of $40 billion. - Clyde Prestowitz, president of Economic Strategy Institute.

3. We have to understand that competition can’t be shut out. In the end, it can only be beaten…. Success will go to those companies and countries which are swift to adapt, slow to complain, open and willing to change. - Tony Blair, UK Prime Minister

4. Amid a great information explosion, the share of knowledge that the world puts to good use is falling. History tells us this will end badly. - Danny Quah, professor of economics at London School of Economics.

I can understand their points and views. The thoughts are just that, thoughts. Just like polls. I can make a poll say anything. These veiws will change and knowledge is pouring all over the world. Learning is finally getting to the people via our computers. True power is knowledge. The money makers have to find the way to help the people.

The issue about “sharing of knowledge…going to end badly” by Danny Quah, bothered me. Does that mean that web blogs such as yours that have been mentoring us re bizdriven life will go to end? That is really very bad. Maybe sharing of knowledge will not be free anymore. Back to the old ways of paying your tuition just to get your degree. But what if I don’t want a degree because I just want to learn? That is really bad. Hoping that it will not come true.

    Hi Spgamil,

NOt really. I think what he means is that there is so much knowledge now, that we are increasingly not able to utilize or put to good use a large portion of them…

When knowledge is scarce, full attention is given, but since it explodes, then we are all hard put how.

It is just like I could afford only one book a month, and enough time to read it 15 years ago. So I savor and read the book slowly. Now, i have dozens of books a month, that I hardly find time to read some of them well, if at all.

I think bizdrivenlife and Wilson are here to stay. He has a lot more to share with us, just like each of us who blog too. The challenge for us is to find the people who need the knowledge we have when they need it.

  6. spgamil Says:

If the good author is referring to our “Search Engines”, then he is right! The search engine is offering tons of information that can not be consumed in one lifetime. The problem really is the “garbage” information that goes with it. People wilI really stop trusting the internet medium as their source of information if what they are getting are mostly “garbage”. I am hoping that someday, somebody will fix this issue by building an engine with “artificial intelligence” filtering capability. Another thing - RSS are starting to show up on websites everywhere. I think it is the beginning. Like the atom bomb, this “knowledge explosion” will ultimately teach us a lesson to put this “power” to good use.
