I write long thoughts in my blog ,humorous observations in eNGy ,short observations in Twitter.

I read various articles, mainly tech news, humor/politics ( they are not much different, are they?), and business news.  When I like it, I tag it as select news to remember, and classify it according to: BizNews, Tech, Mobile Tech/Gadgets, Soft Dev/Outsourcing, and Humor/Offbeat news.

Focus on Core Competence

Here’s a new article I just read in Forbes– an interview with Larry Ellison, Oracle’s boss. This is what he says when he was interviewed if Microsoft, or Oracle should be envious of Google.

It is hard to believe that Microsoft has Google envy. We’re in the software business–we don’t do ads. We’re not going to sell ads on top of our database.

Larry Ellison can be flamboyant, but I think there are many business models, and what is important is not what is hot, but what is the core competence that you can do better than anybody else. Online advertising may be the hot thing, but at the end, you have to do a great job on it to benefit from the trend.

That can be said for individuals. THere is a school of thought that adheres to being “Jack of all Trades” - which is what I think most of our education system produces. And all end up being a master of none.

As in business, I believe individuals should focus on their strengths more and work on their weaknesses less. This would reate a greater value overall.
