As an entrepreneur who have started over seven businesses, and have continues to be involved in all of them, it has never occured to me that buying or selling businesses in itself was an option.
However, there are advantages of buying an existing business, and according to this blog, there may be really good reasons to do — in Canada, seventy per cent of businesses do not make the transition to the next generation. This may be because the siblings now have more options to do what they really want to do, and may not necessarily be interested in taking over the family businesses.
When you consider the other statistic he presented that as many of 70 per cent of the business owners ( now in their fourties and fifties) expect to retire over the next decade, there may be lots of opportunities for businesses to have in buying or taking over family businesses.
