Smishing

September 1st, 2006 by Administrator

There was phising (email fraud) , there was wi-phising ( fraud through wifi), there was vishing ( fraud through bogus phone numbers), and now there is smishing ( phising through cell phone text messaging)

Powering Down a Notebook

September 1st, 2006 by Administrator

My wife has informed me that I have a very bad habit of shutting down the notebook which may damage the hard disk.  NOrmally I used the notebook which is configured to automatically hibernate after I shut down the lid. The problem is that I always shut down the lid, and immediately start moving the notebook ( start putting it inside the bag- while it is still in the process of hibernating).

As we may know, the process of hibernating means the computer is writing data from the memory to the hard disk.  It is at this moment, therefore, that the hard disk is most vulnerable and should not be moved.

So, don’t be impatient.  Shut down, or hibernate your notebook, and wait after the the lights went off before moving it!

That was then, and there was good reason for it. Because there was limited ‘bandwidth’ so to speak to transmit, so in general, they wanted the choice to be as few as possible, and during that time, a capital E was good as a small letter e.

Then I read this article in Wired which says that amongst the keys in the keyboard, the caps lock key Read the rest of this entry »
