Taller People Are Smarter

I used to remember an old joke when the doctor said to the patient — ” The good news is that you don’t have an inferiority complex — you really are inferior!”

We have always grown with the discrimination that tall people are smarter, but a new study says indeed they are.

As early as age three and throughout the study, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests, ” says Anne Case of Princeton University, in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Other studies have shown that shorter people usually on average get lower pay as people discriminate and associate height with intelligence.

National studies show that for both men and women in the US and UK, a height advantage of four inches on average means a 10% increase in wages.

Most likely, better nutrition, which contributes to height also aids in abetting the growth of intelligence.

A Chinese court rejected a woman’s claim for compensation of her sex life, a report in Shanghai Daily noted.

Wei Suying , 31 years old, filed suit asking for $27,650 in compensation from a shopping center where her husband suffered an accident and as a result, suffered from erectile dysfunction.

I was not even 30 years old when my husband suffered the accident, and thus it deprived me of my right to enjoy a sexual life, claims Ms. Wei.

But the court ruled that the Chinese law does not define an individual’s sex life as a protected right.

I just got this off from Forbes Magazine from a column of Paul Johnson.  He says, quoting Lord Beaverbrook, the British Press Baron, saying, ” Look after your good health. You may be the richest man in the world.  You may be the most powerful man in the world.  But if you lose your good health, you will be the most miserable man in the world.”

Sometimes, simple utterances like this get us thinking in a way we have not before. What do you think?

Too Many Customers, Too Much Networking

It is conventional wisdom that in order to get more business, you need more contacts and more customers.  However, there may be such a thing as too much.  I will get flak for this, but let me explain.

The one thing you don’t want to do is to sell to everyone.  Remember your goal is not to create the business, but create it profitably.  And sometimes, not all customers make you money.  Some make you lose.  So one way to increase your profitability is to lose the wrong customers.

For instance, one of the main business model is the unlimited model.  You can pretty much get

The Issue with Lithium Ion Batteries

A few weeks ago, Dell recalled over 4 million batteries.  A few days later, Apple announced that it will recall another million or so batteries.  Why?  The thing to note is that the batteries that power our notebooks, our phones, and our cameras are made of lithium ion - which has some inherent risks.

Lithium Ion technology came into use in the late 1990s.  It allowed more power to be packed in a smaller space - the batteries were lighter, smaller and they last longer.  Moreover, unlike the nickel cadmium batteries - it did not have the so called memory effect which shortens the battery life if you charge the battery midway or before it is fully drained.

However, the chemicals can be hazardous if not properly maintained.  Lithium is a metal that burns spontaneously when exposed to air, and explodes in the presence

Having a vision

It has always been said that people engage in business have to have a vision. I have been director of various community organization where the first exercise in coming up with a plan is to revisit the mission and vision statement.

But of course, as with all advice, its imprortance should be stressed but not overexaggerated. I could remember Lou Gerstner when he was asked to take over IBM in the early 1990s when he said that the last thing IBM needs that time is a vision. He instead focused on execution.

As they say ” asylums after all are filled with people who have visions.”
