Selling Entrepreneurship

For the longest time, I have been thinking about teaching, and i always told myself that I would teach when i can afford to   ( in our country - teachers are not paid well, nor do you have any good prospects of financial rewards)  - that is I would do what I want after I have dispensed with my obligations to family, friends, and colleagues in business.

I finally gotten around to get myself to apply.  Hopefully if all goes well, I will be teaching Entrepreneurship course in the MBA program in my alma mater starting next month.

At any rate, over the weekend, I also came across a really nice content management system, and I decided to set up a site where I could share thoughts, files,  and articles with everybody on entrepreneurship.  It is not quite there yet, but the software allows you to post files ( basically free business and entrepreneur e-books and short videos on doing business ) , share entrepreneurial experiences in blogs, automatically get business blogs and news feeds, and also exchange business opportunities and buy and sell information through the forum.

The site will also be the place where I will ask my students hopefully to share their experiences as well.

I am inviting all interested entrepreneurs or anybody interested to share a thing or two about business to please drop by.   We should have lots of posts, files and experiences to share soon!

It’s great to hear that you’re going into teaching. Why? Because you’re running your own blog, because you are a technology enterpreneur and because you seem to have a keen grasp of the opportunities that the Internet can offer.

In my opinion, not enough business courses today focus on the profits that an Internet enterpreneur can hope for if they play their cards right. To be sure, an MBA class would speak a lot about technology - however, in my experience, any such discourse would discuss how to use technology to save money and improve efficiency (e.g., HRMS, VoiP etc) rather than note that technology and the Internet can actually be used to *make* money.

At the risk of sounding ageist, I’m inclined to attribute this lack of spotlight to the generation of professors and business leaders that we are dealing with at the moment. Although without doubt very knowledgable and successful people, they are the products of an age where the Internet is at best something reserved for geeks living in their parents’ basements. I am confident that 20 years later, if Sergei Brin were to give an MBA lecture, its contents and, in fact, its emphasis would be markedly different from what an MBA lecturer or a business leader would discuss today.

So good luck in your teaching career (I’m not sure if you’re planning to take it up as a full-time or a part-time job) - and here’s hoping that you manage to introduce a fresh element into the course!

    thanks so much George.

No its part time, only 1 course of 3 hours a week. I do look forward that when I reach 55 or 60, I will be full time teaching, writing and lecturing — and hopefully enjoying my grandchildren.

There are several people who went bak to teaching…All of them said “To give back”… Being an educator is really the second nobles profession next to parenting.

Can we join the discussion and share thoughts there too? I think it will be a good idea to have a MODERATED forum where the students can interact with people in the know, so to speak.. And let them see different point of views, to challenge their thinking and have their thinking challenged … An additional task would then be to teach them how to weigh these views and decide which one is best.

BTW, I plan to go back to teaching too, once i set up my free elearning school.

May more people like you give back and contribute to the education of our youth.

Ah teaching, something that I share the same passion and sentiment! Well done Wilson! Perhaps now, pioneering a number of disrupting business initiatives, and cementing that with shared knowledge defines the legacy you’ll leave behind. Something no other Filipino Taipans have been able to accomplish over the years.

It’s one thing to be successful and ‘hoard’ wealth of experiences within the four walls of your cerebrum. It’s another to go out there and openly share your wisdom to those who are in want. I can’t help but quote another Scriptural text - ” The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception”.
