I write long thoughts in my blog ,humorous observations in eNGy ,short observations in Twitter.

I read various articles, mainly tech news, humor/politics ( they are not much different, are they?), and business news.  When I like it, I tag it as select news to remember, and classify it according to: BizNews, Tech, Mobile Tech/Gadgets, Soft Dev/Outsourcing, and Humor/Offbeat news.

Preventing Comment Spam

Over the weekend, I finally sat down and said that I would solve an issue — for so many weeks, I have been getting over a hundred comments a day - all what we could call spambot posts, where advertisements jumbled links.  It is easy for these people to post comments as they have an automated software to do so.

There are ways to combat this, and I believe the best way is to force users to identify a random word displayed as an image so that automated software cannot read it, and therefore cannot post.

I used Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image Plug-in and so far, it has been quite effective — I don’t have to spend time everyday deleting useless comments, and I believe more people like to comment as they can see it immediately posted as opposed to writing something and not seeing it for 2 or 3 days because it was still being moderated.  If you are using Wordpress, you can use this!

    Hiya,

Sorry to hear about the spam problem you’ve been having, but look at the bright side - at least that means your blog is regarded as a valuable place to spam, so that must mean it’s popular!

On a more serious note, I know how bad an issue spam can be (on my previous job, I had to answer e-mail enquiries from prospective students and I had to sort through about 200 e-mails a day, of which only 20 were genuine enquiries and the rest was mostly offers to buy V!a.g.r.a (by the way, I think I can get my hands on at least a few tons of the stuff after working there for a year, so just say the word).

It’s also great to hear that our comments will now be posted automatically - I could not help but wonder whether I posted something wrong or off-topic every single time I saw that my comment was still pending moderation!

    Hi George,

it is always good to hear from you.

I am checking now why your comment did not come out. Maybe because you use the V!agxx word, or some word sthat might have been tagged as spam.

Or else I have to loosen some controls here.
