I may not be the best person to write this. It has been 20 years since I came out of the university, and at that time,i was an employee for 2 years, and an entrepreneur for 18 years.
However, having worked with hundreds of people, I would like to give my 2 cents on the working of a career and the process of moving up the corporate ladder.
First, Choose the right boss ( and the right company and the right industry), that is if you have a choice. There are strict bosses and not strict bosses. The best bosses are the bosses that wants to be better than what he is yesterday. If you are working for a boss who wants to arrive somewhere, it is best - when he goes up, you do too. That boss would most likely be strict and set high standards on himself and his people.
Don’t go for a boss who is strict on you but not on himself — he has this attitude that his people will make him succeed. Of course, the best boss is the one who is strict on himself, but not Read the rest of this entry »

I am sure most of us meet nasty people now and then, and we have to accept it as facts of life.
Life is not exactly a bed of roses, and there is no reason why we should make it more difficult for ourselves and for other people.
It is these little things in life that makes life pleasant, and little thoughtlessness that outright destroys your day. A few weeks ago, a person posted in one of our forums a photo of the hotel, and saying it is one of the great hotels in the area, and the hotel complained that the person was violating the copyright, and ask our web provider to shut off our website and that the photo be taken down — and to think the hotel was being promoted!
Just recently, we got a complaint in our newsletter mailing list, and saying that we were spamming, and on second check, we found that the person is not even in our mailing list. Also, one of our HR people made a mistake in filing our company’s social security claims, and an employee took it out to the internet and immediately started to fan flames that we were not paying the right benefits.
This is a report about some Microsoft people not being unaware that they used a photo that was copyrighted. What did the person ( and he was a previous microsoft employee) do? He replaced the photo it was linked to with a porno picture thus effectively embarassing the blog.
I am sure it was not an intended error, and we really have to make allowances ( and not hit people right away) for people who is doing something ( even wrong) without malice.
Why burn bridges? The people you meet on your way up, may be the people you will meet again on your way down. Even if you can afford to, why not live and let live? I am sure there is enough to share around.

I just came back from attending the Hong Kong ITU Telecom 2006. It is the first time it was held in Asia - in Hong Kong. It used to be held annually in Geneva. It has over 500 exhibitors, and is expected to garner over 60,000 delegates. But the number of exhibitors masked the size of the exhibition — many pavilions were the size of over 50 small booths! Here are some of the most impressive:

HP

Cisco Pavilion

Microsoft
