MS Windows Starter Edition

Here was one of my local articles for our newspaper on why I support a starter edition — lower price points opens up new markets.

The PC industry is now more than 25 years old. The cell phone is about half as old as that, but worldwide, there are now more than 2 billion cell phones, but various estimates still pegged the computers at about roughly 800 million worldwide, and still to hit 1 billion by around 2008 or 2009. While we can argue which is more useful or easier to use, undoubtedly the cell phone is more portable and affordable.

In the Philippines, the difference is even more striking. While cell phone users are variously estimated at over 25 million, computer ownership is still at around 3 to 4 million ( though there are an estimated 10 million internet users, many of them through internet cafes and schools).

Although computers have gone down in cost every year, it is nowhere as cheap as a cell phone. I

Microsoft may want us to believe that we’re working in the dark by using its horribly bloated Office 2003 with the archaic menu system. We could become vastly more productive if we learned to use the new Ribbon interface of Office 2007. However, most of us users in the real world don’t see it that way. All we see is a learning curve.
