China vs. US statistics

How China’s numbers are stacking up vs. United States has always interested me. Here are some from Time Magazine that I feel were quite amusing.
- China is planning to spend $45 billion in its defense military budget next year. In contrast, US will have a budget of $481.4 billion. Yet, United States is worried about China.
- China has a population of 1,314 million. US has 301 million. That round off error that we always do when we say that China has 1 billion plus population is the total population of the United States.
- China has a trade surplus of 177 billion dollars. US has a trade deficit of $225 billion.
- China now has 461 million cell phone users while US has 219 million.
- China has 139 million cable TV subscribers while US has 110 million.
- China has 11.5 million private cars, while US has 136 million. YET, 89,455 people died of traffic accidents in China, while only 48,433 in the United States. Of course, ONLY is a relative word. 48,433 is a lot of people to die in traffic accidents, and is over 50 times the people who died in Iraq every year.

Nothing serious. I only have a lot of spare time. :))
There is a lot of basis to the US fears. Napoleon once said; “Let China sleep for when she awakes, she will shake the world”.
For example, they started using the cellphone only a few years ago and yet, there are now 461 Million cellphones in China.
No wonder, the Philippines is no longer the texting capital of the world.
Very nice blog. I like it!

I always get ticked off when people compare the defense budget of the US and China, as if all of those expenses go into weapons.
A large part of the US budget is for paying salaries. A Chinese soldier gets paid about 80 yuan per month (10 US dollars).
So to pay the salary of 2 million soldiers in the Chinese army will cost 240 million US dollars.
Let’s assume a US soldier gets 1000 per month in salary. That’s 12,000 per year.
The same 240 million that China pays for its 2 million soldiers is just enough to pay 20,000 US soldiers. That’s just salaries. Just imagine how much more expensive food, uniforms, boots, etc. is for each US soldier.
The worry is why China is arming itself so quickly.
