Deep Understanding

During the launch of windows vista and Office 2007 in our city, I remarked to a friend at how easy it is for somebody to do some really ‘cool’ things. The software is so powerful that you can even make an idiot look great, I kidded him.
Which is what you see all around you. Technology is making great inroads so that people who know nothing about photography can take good pictures by simply clicking a shutter, and anybody who knows how to click a mouse will be able to make a passable video in just an hour or so of trial and error. People with nothing to say come up with impressive powerpoint presentations, and I have seen more than my share of excel and word files, impeccably printed in professional looking format which have nothing much to communicate, or which is actually laced with errors. I also have heard people who can’t carry a tune well sounds so impressive in a sing-along system that is designed to modify and alter your voice, and therefore think they are as good as Frank Sinatra.
However, in an era where it is easy to be good, it is still very rewarding to be great!
In an era where everybody can play good golf, people who really play great golf like Tiger Woods is even more applauded. In an era where everybody can snap a good picture, really great films, or really professional photographers are even earning unprecedently.
Which means that in an era where everybody can be a businessman, an entrepreneur who truly understands the basics, and can manage a business to greatness is still a much sought after person. IN an era where everybody can learn to be a good CEO, the truly great CEO is still being wowed and rewarded by the hundreds of millions of dollars.
In an era where simple clicking and dragging can allow you to come up with a business program, Eric Sink blogs that there is still a premium to go for Deep understanding of what is truly happening, and why things are happening. Wasn’t it somewhere we read that the person who knows how will earn good money, but a person that knows why is the one who will be sought after?
Dont’ be content with just skin deep understanding. Go for depth!
