The Long Tail

November 30th, 2007 by Administrator

I have been a fan of the long tail…. But the comment is right on the dot.

The concept is an eye-opener, but you need to understand the business model correctly to leverage whether the market segment can be sold to with a good amount of efficiency.

(Not) making money in the ‘long tail’ | The Pervasive Datacenter - CNET Blogs

Amazon can make money from the long tail, while authors of ‘minor’ books won’t. In the same way, Google makes money from the blogosphere’s long tail, but small blogs don’t.

The Little Car That can

November 28th, 2007 by Administrator

One of the things that impressed me in Europe is the Smart car by Daimler Benz.  It is a two seater, and I think it is enjoying incredible popularity in various cities in Europe like Rome which have small streets and difficult parking.

it is a 2 seater, and it is about a third only of what an American SUV size is.

But then again, why do we need 4 seaters or more?

It is comfortable, it is easy to park, and it saves fuel.

But most of all it revolutionizes the thinking that cars always have to be a certain size or shape to be successful.  It was a revolutionary idea, and it worked!

Why Don’t you Shut up?

November 25th, 2007 by Administrator

Sometimes it just was a right formula to make a hit…

Last week, the Spanish King chastised Venezuelan Presidet Hugo
Chavez by uttering in frustration, ” Por que no te callas?”  which
means why don’t you shut up?

It has now become a ring tone, and purportedly within a week’s time has been downloaded well over half a million times.

Maybe it is in support of the Spanish King.  Maybe it was just a
quote that fit in to the times — everytime your cell phone rings, you
want it to utter, ” Why don’t you shut up”  as in seeming helpless at
this constant interference to our lives.

WEll, it did earn the ring tone provider an extra over 2 million dollars already….

Your Value Proposition

November 19th, 2007 by Administrator

A joke was said that a small pizza place put a small sign in the wall saying: ” Quality.  Service.  Price.  Pick Any Two“.

It may be humor, but it means something …. It is almost regular that I hear entrepreneurs saying they want to create a business that will succeed because - it will offer quality products at the lowest prices with the best service.

You can’t have it all, and as a business, you have to choose one or two at most.

A great book on business is The Discpline of Market Leaders by Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema.  In this book, the authors constantly remind the readers that market leaders by focusing on one discipline- either focus on being operationally efficient, being customer intimate or being technologically superior

You can’t be all three….

250,000 pageviews

November 16th, 2007 by Administrator

Its been three years since i started my blog.

Thank youall for your support as I am closing in on 250,000 pageviews.  It has been a great way to make new friends, learn new ideas, and  reevaluate our own outlook.

Writing about things have made me remember them better ( probably half of all the things I wrote in this blog would already have been gone if I did not write it down), and organize them better.  I started the blog because I feel it was the best way to get ideas down on record before it is lost forever.  Hopefully some of these materials you find educational will find its way to some archives or books that will also be of use to people who are as passionate on me about business and technology ( and family balance, and the humorous side of life).

I was going over some statistics, and while I compiled my earlier best select articles here , it was surprising to note that my best consistent pageviews come from some series of project management articles I wrote over 4 years ago.  At that time, because of some project management issues, I took time to go over a dozen books, and learn project management basics, and even endeavored to write some down.  I thought of putting it in the blog as a way so that my attempt ( I finished only the first four chapters) wouldn’t necessarily go to waste, but was surprised that almost on a daily basis, the series get checked.

The most popular seems to be:

-The Difference Between Projects and Operations

- Organizing for Projects

As I approached my fourth year of blogging, I hope to continue to share with you some thoughts as it occurs to me, and hope it will be of value to you.

Hah! At least

November 15th, 2007 by Administrator

The stressed out sales person quit his job and became a cop.

Hows the job, his friend asked.

Well, he replied. The pay is bad and the hours are awful. But at least the customer is always wrong.

People with Highest IQs

November 14th, 2007 by Administrator

This includes a fUN IQ test you may want to try.

If you go down the list, you will find that there are artists, scientists, chess champions, politicians, philosophers, but egad! Out of almost a hundred, only one businessman I know, Paul Allen ( is he an engineer or a businessman?) with IQ of 160 made it to the list.

Nobody would argue that it would take a lot of brains to be a successful scientist or researcher. Does it take good IQ to succeed in business?
