I have worked with dozens of managers, having now the responsibility of almost 300 employees. 

What makes a good manager.  I think a lot of literature have been written about the subject, but I will present to you 2 managers and a set of 3 rules, and I think it is easy to tell who is the better manager.

manager 1,
- you don’t know what is happening to his team or group.
- always ask for project completion extension
- he keeps losing people to resignations

manager 2.
- he gives you good summary report and visibility as to what is happening.
- he finishes project on time
- he loses people but only those he let go.  The people he chooses to stay are happy to stay.
