A Rethink of Open Source Assumptions

Yesterday I was able to meet with Bill Hilf, Microsoft’s general manager for Platform Strategy,during the launch of Windows 2008 server ( also SQL 2008 and Studio 2008) in Manila.
After his main plenary, I was lucky to have some time to sit on the table with him, and discussed some things, and later on, I was also able to attend a private session with some other top Microsoft partners and customers with him.
His comments, and some subsequent conversations gave me some food for thought about open source.
I am not saying that I will stop using open source nor will I suddenly start to put everything on Windows Server. I do know also that Bill Hilf is a controversial person, and he has made some utterances that created a lot of strong reactions, but I think there are some points that I think is worthwhile.
a.) Linux is here to stay, and Microsoft cannot be all things to all people. So the main thing Microsoft needs to do is to insure Interoperability. Being able to work with the most number of people and technologies is the way to get the most business.
