Metering Internet Use

Some of your customers are better to be given to your competitors - this must be the logic behind Time Warners experiemtn to meter internet use.

And they have a point - after all, they showed that 5 percent of their top users use up more than half of their bandwidth.

However, metering internet use can be a risk - even if fairer to other users.

Some people may sign up - because they would bet that in that kind of environment, their internet would be faster if there are less people who ‘abuse’.

However,it can introduce uncertainty - if the user is not sure how much he uses, he may be reluctant to sign up - even if Time Warner is willing to give 250 gigabytes…. So the user may not sign up even if he uses less than 10 gigabytes a month, and that is a business uncertainty that Time Warner will have to address in this new marketing tack.

Time Warner Cable tries metering Internet use - Yahoo! News

Metered billing is an attempt to deal fairly with Internet usage, which is very uneven among Time Warner Cable’s subscribers, said Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable’s executive vice president of advanced technology.
