Instant Messaging reduces Workplace Interruption?

I let my sales people use instant messaging. But for developers or myself, I believe a long train of thought without a screen popping up and say, ” Hi!” is essential to productivity.

Here’s a study that says otherwise — but i would say the jury is still out, and it is not good to generalize — whether it would or would not would still depend on individual preferences, and their job functions!

Instant Messaging Proves Useful In Reducing Workplace Interruption

Employers seeking to decrease interruptions may want to have their workers use instant messaging software, a new study suggests. A recent study by researchers at Ohio State University and University of California, Irvine found that workers who used instant messaging on the job reported less interruption than colleagues who did not.
