I guess sometimes the best innovation is the most obvious…
Now don’t get me wrong - this proposal is simple in its approach but a devil in implementing…
How do you automatically switch off servers that are not in use, and power them up when they need to — without degrading performance.
Any proposal that will mean using less energy will lengthen the life of our planet, and make it a better place to live…
New technology to reduce power in data centers by 80 percent | - CNET News.com
“We realized one could use this to automate the switching on and off of servers, and we saw a business opportunity,” CEO Pfeiffer recalled.
Power Assure’s Holistic Power Management collects power usage data every minute from servers, as well as shifts in utilization and unexpected shifts in Internet traffic from applications. When the Internet traffic increases, more servers will be dynamically switched on and vice versa.
Most server companies don’t publish power consumption information for servers when they are turned on, running at idle, or at full load. As a result, users don’t know how much power they are really using anywhere in the data center, Pfeiffer said.

For three years, he just used the Wi-Fi of his neighbors.
Here is one of the things he said…
However, caveat , in many cities, stealing using other people’s wifi is deemed a crime. Last year, a man was fined $400 for using wi-fi. I believe somebody in London also went to jail.
Confessions of a Wi-Fi Thief - TIME
I was always happy to see the boring ones ( linksys, Netgear, default) , because the people who don’t bother thinking of clever names for their home networks are the same people who don’t bother to password-protect them.

I just got this, and it starts to get me really upset…. Something’s wrong with the way Yahoo! does things… You will have to indulge me on this…. After four years of blogging, and over a thousand posts, this is the first time I recall ranting over something….
Important note:We’re writing to remind you that it’s time for the annual autorenewal of your service. Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!’s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.
I registered a lot of domains with Yahoo. It used to cost $9.95 a year. Then, a few months ago, I noticed that the renewals started to come in at $12.95.
Then I got a note that they would increase that to $34.95 per year…
I am not sure what Yahoo is trying to do, but if they are making noises about increasing their revenues, you don’t do it by tripling the price of something as generic as domain names…
Anyhow, three weeks ago, I started to transfer my domains into another service who was still decent enough to charge $8.99.
The domains successfully transferred. Now I get scores of letters from Yahoo that they want to renew domains that are already transferred. Why don’t they check first?
Its not with you anymore, Guys!!!
