I have been using Twitter since I started on it about three months ago. I have done well over 1,200 ‘microblogs’, or posts of 140 words or less, and accumulated a good number of friends whose posts I read, as well as friends who also follow what I write.
There are a number of competitors out there: Plurk, Pownce, Tumblr, Jaiku and Friendfeed. While Plurk has been touted as a substitute of Twitter, and many did try it when Twitter ocassionally was down, it still has some ways to go. It has some innovations, but twitter is still more intuitive. Moreover, if Twitter will win, it will be because of its 3rd party enhancements. This bolsters the belief that you cannot just command a following, because everybody wants to do things differently, and if you want to succeed, its great to have an API where people can also add to it. In short, the greatest successes now will not be your website, but your site as a platform.
The gem is the way Twitter enables you to message also other people (either by referencing him through @, or sending a direct message). The other great gem of Twitter is its host of utilities of over a hundred third party applications, many of which I like:
- Twitterfeed - this is a gem that automatically announces your blog posts as a tweet.
- Twitterfox - A very good add-on if you use Firefox. Sends you new tweets through neat pop ups, and allows you to reply without having to open one more web page.
-
Tweetlater - you can put the post and scheduled it to be posted later.
-
Twitternotes - this is a gem especially if you use twitter to remember important facts. You have it monitor your tweets, and if the tweet is important, you start it with a + sign, and Twitternotes will take it and store it for you.
-
HelloTxt - its a great utility if you want a single page where you can, at your discretion, update Twitter, Plurk, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social networks. It has recently also increase some of its offerings - for instance, it is easy for you to get updates of your 50 friends in Facebook there - without going to Facebook.
When you post through it, it will also shorten your URL automatically… Added utility is that it keeps track of the shortened URL, and inform you how many times it was clicked.
-
Twitpic - great utility if you want to post pictures, and automatically it will tweet about it.
-
quotably - if you are confused by all those conversations and answering back each other - Twitter is not good in following conversations - this is a nice site to do it.
-
TweetScan - great utility to search through what others are talking about, or simply to recall what you tweeted at some past date.
-
CrowdStatus - if you are following hundreds or thousands of people, you may not always have the time to read them all. If you are busy, this is a nice utility not to miss the latest tweet of your maybe top 20 or 40 friends in one glance.
-
TweetStats - tells you how many posts a person makes over a period of time, including who are the people they converse with, and others. This is great if you are very particular of the people you choose to follow, and will allow you better ideas on who they usually converse with as well. If you respect the person you follow - you may likely want to follow the people he most converse with too.
-
Twittermail - This is a great utility. It allows you to post through email. It also allows you to post through email and post later ( you can specify the time in the next 24 hours you want to post). Moreover, you can send an email with a special keyword in your subject, and it will email you back the last 20 posts of your friends. This is great if have mail in your cellphone, and you just want to get updated on the latest 20 of your friends.
