253 mln Chinese Internet users, 214 mln of them use broadband

I think it is only a matter of time that China would have the most internet users.

There were 253 mln Chinese Internet users in June 2008, China Internet Network Information Centre reported. Internet penetration in China is still at 19.1%. 214 mln, or 84.7% of all users, are connecting via broadband.

$8.5 bln lost to viruses and spyware in 2006-2007

This is a huge figure. I remember there was a time when viruses would struck on a certain day, and the whole office would be down, and it would merit front page news.

but not anymore - but the threat is still real. The viruses have just evolved into being ego trips to more sinister objectives which means it is not in the interest for the virus writer to get publicity or announced that it is now inside you.

and that is even more dangerous!

US consumers lost almost $8.5 bln over the last two years to viruses, spyware, and phishing schemes. Consumer Reports estimates that American consumers have replaced about 2.1 mln computers over the past two years because of online threats. Consumers have 1 in 6 chance of becoming a cybervictim, down from 1 in 4 in 2007. [...]
