A good number of factors.

New York came out top, then London and Paris.

These are not only top business centers, but also has a vibrant cultural life, and heavy international representations. Quality of life and literacy also figures.

That should also be how you look at companies — not just the profitability or sales growth, but reputation, brand excellence and strength, quality of human resources, efficiency ,etc.

Life, as well as business is never simple anymore.

The World’s Most Global Cities - BusinessWeek

The top cities on the index—which also include Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles—aren’t surprising, given their financial markets and sophisticated business climates. But their positions as global leaders also are bolstered by the presence of top-quality universities, world-class museums, international cuisine, and culturally diverse populations.

Elvis presley was reputed to make about 51 million dollars last year' thirty years after he died. This was reputedly even more than madonna.

What was surprising was albert einsteins heirs who made 18 million from licensing little einstein. I guess fame and being known for excellence has a way to monetize.

What to remember during the recession

Companies make more dramatic gains and losses in recessions than in boom times, and those that make major gains are more likely to sustain them.

We need to constantly remember this, and if we are confident, there is every reason to think that it will work out — the idea is not only to gain more against your competitors during good times, but to manage so that you will lose less than your competitors during bad times.

Microsoft offers cloud computing a hearty handclasp

It has taken them awhile to make this announcement, and I’m sure they took the time to do it right…. Microsoft can become a formidable competitor if past experience would suggest — they just keep hammering at it, and they have the resources to do it.

Microsoft and Ray Ozzie cracked the door half open this morning on Windows Azure the infrastructure formerly known as Windows Cloud. In the process Ozzie served notice that IT will remain in the WindowsOffice grip but with an abstraction layer that blurs the on-premise and on-demand worlds. The outlines of Live Meshs role as arbiter of this abstraction were there to be inferred but the details of how the Azure service bus arbitrates things like federated identity workflow services and overall services management will be left to Tuesdays keynote. But the leisure with which Ozzie and his lieutenants roll out the announcements belies the speed with which Microsoft is executing this corner turn.

How pro-Obama is Silicon Valley? Workers at the Valleys top 20 employers have donated .4 million to Obamas campaign — five times more than the 7000 theyve donated to McCains campaign through September as tabulated by the Merc. AMD AMD whose employees gave 00 to McCain and 00 to Obama. Two caveats to this Many people probably didnt list an employer with their donations. And McCain cant accept as much money as Obama because he chose to accept public financing. One bit of good news for tech companies regardless of who wins Both candidates support an increase in the number of H1B visas granted to immigrant skilled workers every year. Companies like Microsoft and Oracle have been begging Congress to increase the cap for years — its currently 65000 per year.See AlsoImmigrant-Hungry Tech Companies See! One of our issues in the business is that the yen has strengthened from about $1 to 110 yen to now about $1 to 92 yen, while all other currencies are weakening.

Many economic developments were unforseen, some unprecedented, and some defies logic.

More banks turn to Treasury - Yahoo! News

More U.S. banks lined up for government cash on Monday and the Group of Seven expressed concern that Japan’s soaring yen currency posed a threat to financial and economic stability as recession worries spread worldwide.

Stock markets worldwide also tumbled again with key Wall Street indexes hitting a 5-1/2-year low.

Free not so Free

As a company, always be on the lookout what you are purchasing.

Sometimes free may cost money…

And don’t be too stingy to save everything. … buying expertise, support and insurance could well be a good investment if you are already saving a lot.

‘Free lunch’ and open-source support |- CNET News

Sometimes “free” is not so free.

I recently discovered this when a large, global system integrator (SI) deployed Alfresco Labs, our free and unsupported product, for a large client in Europe. The SI wasn’t a partner of ours, and as the client soon learned when its deployment stumbled, the SI wasn’t capable of providing enterprise-class support on the product. Yes, it knew the product well enough to deploy it and get paid over $50 million for its trouble, but when the deployment hit a glitch, guess to whom the SI came crawling for help
