Blu Ray will Succeed - in Due Time

October 1st, 2008 by Administrator

Blu Ray will succeed, but it will take time.

Simply because while the advances are substantial, it is not immediately perceptible.  DVD is already quite good technology.  I remember it took some years before the DVD became mature enough and low price enough to make an impact on VHS.

On Asia, we actually had a couple of years using VCD ( video CD).  It was understood to be a temporary stop gap technology, but it disappeared when DVD became as cheap and as prevalent as VCDs.

Similarly when Blu-ray is prevalent enough, and companies can produce compatible with backward compatibility, it will succeed.

But the same as WindowsVista, pretty soon, it will be the only technology available, and by default it will succeed, becaus eyou can’t buy anything else.

Believing Blu-ray will succeed doesn’t make sense |- CNET News

According to Niel
sen, Blu-ray’s market share dropped to just 8 percent of the overall market, giving DVDs a whopping 92 percent ownership.

Granted, those figures show only one week’s performance, and Blu-ray may have a huge week soon and capture more of the market, but let’s be honest with ourselves: do we really think that will happen?

According to a study released in August by ABI Research, more than half the people it surveyed had no plans to buy a standalone Blu-ray player in the near future, and 23 percent are considering it, but not until 2009.

Yes, I think, Blu-ray will be in due time pick up. The problem with Blu-ray at this time is that you’ll only find them in very limited players: PS3, the VAIO, and a handful of stand-alone players. Not to mention the price of the player and Blu-ray disk, and to top it all, you’ll have to buy an LCD or plasma TV to appreciate the beauty of the Blu-ray movie. At this time, we ought to expect that many people in the Philippines will respond that they’re already satisfied with their DVD player, because there’s not enough good reason to buy a Blu-ray player.
After the HD-DVD and Blu-ray competition left the former biting the dust, everybody was thinking that Sony would lower the prices of the Blu-ray players, but, no, they didn’t. Recently Toshiba said that they’re going to make a DVD player that would up-grade the resolution of a DVD movie to an HD-resolution (I forgot if it’s 720 or 1080) but anyway, Toshiba is looking for other ways to “get back” at Blu-ray by using the current DVD technology.

A day after I posted the comment on this topic, I now read at pcmag.com that prices of blu-ray players are going down - up to less than 300 dollars (less than P15,000), and that’s good news. Maybe here it’s not of a breaking news but for those who’s planning to setup a decent home theater, it’s going to be “awesome.” Now, if we can make the LCD’s lower their price to at about the 30 thousand range (or less!) then that would be “totally awesome.”
