How can one catch tiger cubs without entering the tiger’s lair?
During the reign of Emperor Mingdi on the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 24 AD) , an ambassador Ban Chao was appointed to go to the state of Charklik on a goodwill visit.
While they were there, they learned that the Charklik king was also entertaining another envoy from an enemy state, and was on a difficult situation on who to ally with.
They hurriedly discussed on how to meet the situation. Ban Chao said, “No one can ever obtain tiger cubs without entering the tiger’s lair. We need to do what we can to get rid of the enemy’s envoy. Unless we act resolutely, we will lose the alliance, and probably might not be able to get back alive.”
That very night, they stormed the camp of the enemy envoy , and set fire on their tents. The leader was killed, and the Charklik king eventually entered into friendly relations with the Han Court.
