Cisco buys into NeoPath

neopathcisco
Cisco’s investment strategists must be reading Network World’s 2006 10 Startups to Watch list; the network vendor this week got in on an $11 million funding push for NeoPath Networks, a maker of file and storage virtualization gear — and a member of Network World’s top hot start-up honor roll.

NeoPath, founded in 2002, makes a device that consolidates file systems on servers and network-attached storage spread out across an enterprise, and allows administrators to configure and allocate storage space across the network through a centralized interface.

Cisco joined August Capital, DCM-Doll Capital Management and Gabriel Venture Partners in the funding round for NeoPath. The $11 million sum brings investment in the Mountain View, Calif., company up to almost $30 million.

The investment in NeoPath shows Cisco’s continued interest in virtualization technology. Wide-area file services (WAFS), server and storage virtualization have all been in Cisco’s crosshairs recently. Cisco acquired server virtualization switch maker TopSpin a year ago, as well as WAFS systems maker Actona.

Cisco also got deeper into the storage virtualization market last year with a line card for the MDS 9500 storage switch that brings IBM, EMC and Veritas virtualization capabilities into the box.

Mac OS X Tip of the Week: See-Through Stickies

One of the Stickies features is the ability to make a it translucent. Just click on a sticky and press Command-Option-T (Translucent Window). Then you can see right through your sticky to the items behind it. This is really handy if you want to see items in Finder windows that would normally be covered by any open Stickies. To turn off the transparency, just press the shortcut again when Stickies is active.

Groundbreaking Study From McAfee Shows Users Are at Risk When Using Internet Search Engines

mcafee McAfee Releases Comprehensive Study of Search Engines That Estimates 285 Million Clicks to Hostile Sites Occurs Every Month Through Search Queries

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), using research from the McAfee® SiteAdvisorTM team, today released a groundbreaking study co-authored by Ben Edelman, noted spyware researcher and an advisor to McAfee, of the safety of the Internet search engines that shows search engine users are at risk of clicking through to Web sites that can compromise their online safety. The investigation, which studied the 5 major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, Ask) was initiated in January and concluded in April, found that even common search terms can lead users to risky sites.

Among the study’s top-line findings:

  • All of the major search engines returned risky sites in their search results for popular keywords.
  • Dangerous sites soared to as much as 72% of results for certain popular keywords, such as “free screensavers,” “digital music,” “popular software,” and “singers.”
  • “Search engines clearly play a critical role in Internet use: As a convenient starting point for online browsing, they’re estimated to account for about half of all site visits,” said Chris Dixon, who heads the McAfee SiteAdvisor product team. “But economically motivated purveyors of spam, adware and other online problems quickly follow where consumers go online, in this case directly to search engine results. Today, based on browsing trends, we estimate that U.S. Internet users make 285 million clicks to hostile sites every month through search queries.”
