Clipping RFID boosts privacy

IBM and a Canadian manufacturer are teaming up to reduce concerns
over privacy and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
The tags, essentially tiny radio transmitters, are predicted by
many to play an increasing role in retail merchandising. Privacy
advocates, however, are worried that the tags would continue to
transmit after they’ve left the store, potentially revealing
information about consumers.

Toronto-based Marnlen RFiD and IBM have agreed to explore the use
of the Clipped Tag technology for RFID tags. The Clipped Tag
technology, developed at IBM’s Watson Research Center, allows
consumers to tear off a section of the tag. This reduces the tag’s
read range to just a few inches, protecting consumer privacy while
maintaining the benefits of the technology, such as product
authentication or recalls.

Paul Moskowitz, IBM Research, said, “The Clipped Tag puts privacy
protection into the hands of the consumer. It gives the consumer
a visual confirmation of the tags’ modification.”

Labels containing RFID tags are already used in a wide range of
industries to streamline shipping and inventory systems, track
valuable parts and equipment and to authenticate products. Some
companies are starting to use the technology on single items.
The pharmaceutical industry, for example, is using RFID tags to
help protect consumers from counterfeit drugs.

HP Network Storage for SMBs

Hewlett-Packard (HP) will launch a family of networked storage products in September to compete with EMC for small and medium-size business customers.

The products, announced Monday, will simplify the process of migrating data from application servers to shared network storage, said Debbie Young, worldwide marketing manager for HP’s StorageWorks division, in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

HP will price the products beginning at $5,000 for 1T byte of capacity and ranging up to $10,000, coming in below its current low-end storage tool, the modular smart array (MSA).

As their businesses grow, users will be able to upgrade through the spectrum of HP storage options, from 24T bytes for the MSA to 72T bytes for the enterprise virtual array (EVA) to 332T bytes for the XP array. More …

McAfee Logo McAfee Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management Solutions Provide Protection to Identify and Block Potential New Attacks

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 11, 2006 - McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the global leader in Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management, today announced that it provides coverage for the 18 security vulnerabilities disclosed by Microsoft Corporation today. These vulnerabilities have been reviewed by McAfee® Avert® Labs, and based on their findings, McAfee recommends that users confirm the Microsoft product versioning outlined in the bulletins and update as recommended by Microsoft and McAfee. This includes deploying solutions to ensure protection against the vulnerabilities outlined in this advisory.

“Microsoft continues to provide numerous patches for critical vulnerabilities as seen today in the widely deployed Microsoft Office and Excel applications which accounted for 70% of the patched vulnerabilities,” said Monty Ijzerman, senior manager of the Global Threat Group for McAfee Avert Labs. “McAfee sees this as part of the trend to attack and target applications as well as base operating systems.
