Details on the AMD Quad Core Processor

AMD blasts off Quad for PC DIYers | CNET News.com

It has four processing cores; they just don’t live together. But Advanced Micro Devices is betting that hard-core gamers won’t care about the architecture used to build its new Quad FX Platform.

AMD was expected to launch the new product, formerly known as “4×4,” on Thursday via a motherboard built by Asustek Computer. The Quad FX Platform consists of two of the new dual-core Athlon FX-70 series processors connected to two Nvidia chipsets that offer a total of four PCI Express slots for high-end graphics cards, said Ian McNaughton, product manager for AMD’s Athlon FX product.

Cisco Networking Academy Program Students Go For Gold in National and Cross-Border Competitions

As if having to pass tests for the Cisco® Networking Academy® Program were not enough, IT students worldwide are pitting their wits against each other.

Contests related to the program have become so popular that they have turned into annual events attracting hundreds of participants and a blaze of national media attention.

In Bulgaria this year, for example, 149 secondary school students from across the country took part in a two-day networking test that was praised in writing by Bulgarian president Georgi Parvanov and covered by 12 television stations, making primetime on the national Channel 1.

The country’s Ministry of Education included the contest in its schedule of national activities and wrote to all schools to inform them of it, while the Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Emilia Maslarova, made an official address to those present. More.

New Microsoft Leaders

The Soul Of A New Microsoft

No one leader will replace William H. Gates III, the iconic software geek who came to define an era and plans to leave the company in June, 2008. But a cadre of execs is positioned to step up. Steven Sinofsky, the longtime head of the Office unit and onetime Gates technical assistant, has been put in charge of speeding up the Windows product cycle. Ray Ozzie, a relative Microsoft newbie and computing industry icon, is working to Web-ify many of Microsoft’s products.

The soul of the new Microsoft, though–its Geek 2.0–may just be Allard, the vice-president for design and development at its Entertainment & Devices unit. Allard looks and acts nothing like the prototypical Microsofty.

Microsoft allows free copying of their UI

I am still having some problems understanding the new UI, but people who start getting familiar with it raves on it.

Microsoft Licenses Office 2007 UI

Microsoft has done a cool and smart thing, and decided to let (almost) everyone use the Office 2007 UI.

Office 2007 features an entirely innovative UI; while it takes cues from some previous ideas, it is hard for anyone to point out any previous software which uses even a similar UI system, and Microsoft could have easilly copyrighted and maybe even patented the entire system, and kept it entirely exclusive for a long time. Even smarter, they could have limited use of it only to Windows applications.

Instead, they decided to free it.

A great Treatise a techie should read

How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary

To be a good programmer is difficult and noble. The hardest part of making real a collective vision of a software project is dealing with one’s coworkers and customers. Writing computer programs is important and takes great intelligence and skill. New Vista and Office 2007 much easier to use, easier to support

Microsoft banks on business upgrades - Yahoo! News

Microsoft executives claim that computer users who upgrade to Vista or Office, but especially both together, will be dazzled by how much more productive they can become. The company spent years studying how people use its most popular programs and retooled the user interface accordingly, trying to make it easier to find and use features.

It also worked to make its software sturdier than ever — less prone to crashes and less vulnerable to hackers. Because of that and new tools aimed at pleasing corporate technology staffs, Microsoft estimates the labor costs of supporting a machine running Vista will be $507 per PC a year, down from $542
