Thank Carly - Forbes.com
Five years after Hewlett-Packard’s controversial $24 billion acquisition of PC rival Compaq–and almost 18 months after the ouster of the chief executive who engineered it–the deal continues to do damage … to HP’s rivals.
Hurd’s detail-oriented management style, combined with the ability to
wring the best prices out of PC parts makers, has turned the PC
business into a horror show for Dell and Gateway. HP grabbed 18.2% of
the worldwide PC market during the second quarter of this year, up from
14.9% the year earlier. Meanwhile, Dell has dropped to 15% from 17.8%.
Likewise, Gateway has withered under HP’s assault, grabbing just 6.1%
of the U.S. market, down from 7% during the year-ago period.

This might happen here in the Philippines to prevent hackers, manipulators, blackmails and swindlers. Just recently, China, together Yahoo! Inc., Microsoft Corp. and other providers of blogging technology, agreed to try to sign up users under their real names and to censor the posts.
Under the accord with the Internet Society of China, an offshoot of the information industry ministry, the companies are “encouraged” to register users under their real names. The companies may be forced to censor content or identify bloggers.
The agreement is detrimental to free speech because service providers would be forced to divulge bloggers’ identities or be punished by the government. The companies also are required to “delete illegal and bad information” from blogs.
Beat that!!!

An old worm known as Slammer, which originated back in January 2003, is still going strong according to Gunter Ollmann, director of security strategy at IBM’s Internet Security Systems (IBM ISS).
Ollmann, the author of the white paper “Old threats never die”, says that Slammer is still the threat most commonly encountered by IBM ISS.
But it isn’t just high-profile vulnerabilities and malware that are a problem, Ollmann said. In effect, the security industry is now witnessing a snowball effect, where threats are accumulating at an “exponential” rate, and it isn’t really possible to eradicate any of those threats.
