Slimmer iMacs

070807_imac_vmed_1p_widec

Apple Inc. unveiled a line of slimmer desktop computers in a long-expected update of its iMac brand.  The new iMacs, which will sport thinner aluminum casings, have displays measuring 20 inches and 24 inches.

The last update to the iMac line was in September 2006, when Apple introduced a model with a 24-inch screen ? its largest ? and said the entire model line would be powered by Intel chips instead of ones from International Business Machines Corp.

Apple recently launched the iPhone mobile device in a bid to build a third major product line alongside its Macintosh computers and iPod media players, but desktop and laptop sales still account for the bulk of its revenue.  Apple has also used the iPod and, now, the iPhone as “halo” products to draw customers into stores and get them interested in its computers.

270,000 iPhone Units and Counting

No, it’s not the wildly optimistic between-500,000-and-a-million figure that got tossed around during the initial iPhone fever, but that’s still a pretty good number for 48 hours.

iPhone Microscope Hack

Iphonecam

The picture above is a Powerbook Keycap, lit from behind with a flashlight, and taken with an iPhone camera. The super smooth fit and finish of the iPhone lends itself well to this hack. The flush camera lens is easily covered with an $8 Radio Shack magnifier. The image above is resized to fit on the blog. The original is of higher quality.

Leopard looks like… Vista

Steven Jobs told WWDC (wWorldwide Developer Conference) keynoters that he would show ten of the best of the 300 new features coming in Leopard when it ships in October this year. Here’s what Jobs’ hit list looked like to this Windows user:

1. New Leopard Desktop: Not a whole lot different from Vista’s Aero and Sidebar.

2. New Finder: Many of the same capabilities as the integrated “Instant Search” in Vista (the subsystem that Google is trying to get the Department of Justice to rule as being anti-competitive). The new Leopard Coverflow viewing capability looked almost identical to Vista’s Flip 3D to me.

3. QuickLook: Live file previews — just like the thumbnail preview capability available in Vista.

Cisco and Apple: Best Friends Forever

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch blog gives six reasons why Cisco and Apple will end up working together, saying that both parties have benefits to offer each other. Meanwhile, the WSJ is reporting that Apple and Cisco will likely resolve their differences by the end of this week (Apple’s deadline to respond to Cisco’s lawsuit is Thursday). The outcome will be interoperability, which is what Cisco says it wanted all along. The WSJ says interoperability is in Steve Jobs’ thoughts, given his call last week for a common standard for copy-protection software. What has this to do with Cisco? Imagine a Linksys box allowing customers to play their iTunes-purchased music around the home.
