Linksys introduces new design for home networking products at CeBIT.

Linksys, a Division of Cisco, the leading provider of VoIP, wireless
and networking hardware for the consumer and small business
environments, announced its new Ultra RangePlus home networking
products at CeBIT held March4-9 in Hannover.The Ultra RangePlus gateway and router are the first models available
that feature a stylish new design and come with improved usability
features such as the Linksys Easylink Advisor (LELA), which simplifies
the set-up of your network and helps assure that all devices and
connections are stable and highly secure.With the launch of the
Ultra RangePlus products Linksys also revealed the latest version of
its Home Monitoring Camera (WVC54GCA), now including a microphone and
improved image quality.

The Cisco ASA 5505 Adaptive Security Appliance is a next-generation, full-featured security appliance for small business, branch office, and enterprise teleworker environments that delivers high-performance firewall, SSL and IPsec VPN, and rich networking services in a modular, “plug-and-play” appliance. Using the integrated Web-based Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager, the Cisco ASA 5505 can be rapidly deployed and easily managed, enabling businesses to minimize operations costs. The Cisco ASA 5505 features a flexible 8-port 10/100 Fast Ethernet switch, whose ports can be dynamically grouped to create up to three separate VLANs for home, business, and Internet traffic for improved network segmentation and security. The Cisco ASA 5505 provides two Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports, enabling simplified deployment of Cisco IP phones with zero-touch secure voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities, and deployment of external wireless access points for extended network mobility. The Cisco ASA 5505 also provides significant expandability and investment protection through its modular design, similar to the rest of the Cisco ASA 5500 Series, offering both an external expansion slot and multiple USB ports that enable the addition of services in the future.

Cisco has developed a set of small smart robots, which can act as wireless communications relays, that sense when a mobile user is moving out of service range, and can follow the user to maintain connectivity. Cisco talked about the prototype box-shaped robots at this week’s Military Technologies Conference in Boston. According to Dave Buster, product marketing manager for the Cisco Global Government Solutions Group, the robots can follow a user almost anywhere to maintain connectivity. Published reports said the robots were part of Cisco’s “Information on the move” initiative – a wide-ranging plan to secure all things wireless. More..

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch blog gives six reasons why Cisco and Apple will end up working together, saying that both parties have benefits to offer each other. Meanwhile, the WSJ is reporting that Apple and Cisco will likely resolve their differences by the end of this week (Apple’s deadline to respond to Cisco’s lawsuit is Thursday). The outcome will be interoperability, which is what Cisco says it wanted all along. The WSJ says interoperability is in Steve Jobs’ thoughts, given his call last week for a common standard for copy-protection software. What has this to do with Cisco? Imagine a Linksys box allowing customers to play their iTunes-purchased music around the home.

Small businesses face many of the same security problems as larger companies, including virus attacks, malware, and employee data theft. The difference is that they often lack the resources of a Fortune 500 company. In addition, many continue to use a disparate array of endpoint security solutions installed piecemeal over the years–firewalls, intrusion detection software, antivirus software, log management–from multiple vendors, creating a logistical and management nightmare.

“The problem with disparate endpoint security environments is that none of these systems report to a single location,” says Dan Holt, principal consultant for HEIT Consulting, Inc., a Cisco Premier Certified Partner. “So it’s impossible to efficiently manage all of the devices. You’ve got to read logs from each system, try to correlate them, manually check devices–from a total cost of ownership perspective, it’s a heavy burden, particularly for a small or medium-sized business.”
