For the first time in recent memory, Microsoft has chosen to stick with its code name for a final Windows release.

In a blog posting, general manager Mike Nash said that the next version of Windows will retain its Windows 7 code-name when it is released to the market–a date currently pegged as late 2009 or early 2010.

“Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7″ just makes sense,” Nash wrote.

Microsoft’s latest Ads

Microsoft’s cancelled the Jerry Seinfeld ads. I kind of like them…. but I guess the next ones are pretty much easier to understand and also more exciting.

It talks about “I’m a Pc! ” and tries to prevent the stereotype. It shows that there are many different kinds of people who use the PC doing incredibly different things. After all, over a billion people use Windows, and it IS time to show that they are not all forty something nerds with eyeglasses who are not creative or exciting.

Here are the first ads:

Microsoft”s newest ad - with bill Gates and Seinfield

What do people say about the ad ? It does not even mention Microsoft or Vista.

Why is Microsoft spending $10 million on it?

Well, its cool, and I like it. More and more, ads are not supposed to fork out information. It just makes you feel good and reminds you that here is a sincere company that is trying to do what it can to make technology easier and more enjoyable to use.

OOXML becomes ISO Standard

Microsoft file format approved as ISO standard - Yahoo! News

The format used by Microsoft Corp.’s Office 2007 programs to save documents will become an international standard after appeals against the move failed to gather sufficient support, the International Organization for Standardization said Friday.

The decision ends months of wrangling over whether Microsoft’s Office Open XML format should be considered an open standard — a requirement for many lucrative government contracts.

64 bit Windows finally Taking Off?

Could 64-bit Windows finally be taking off? | A blog by Ina Fried - CNET News.com

The trend is also evident by looking at the kinds of systems being sold at retailers. In its circular this Sunday most of the desktops and half of the dozen notebook models being advertised by Office Depot had the 64-bit version of Windows pre-installed.

The mix was similar in Circuit City’s advertisement, with nearly all of the desktops and many of the notebooks running 64-bit Windows

Gateway, for example, is shifting to an entirely 64-bit Windows lineup on its desktops, starting with the back-to-school shopping season.

It’s a dramatic shift even from last quarter, in which only about 5 percent of its total desktop and notebook models had a 64-bit OS installed. For the third quarter, 95 percent of desktop models and 30 percent of notebook systems will have a 64-bit OS.

Among the factors leading to the shift are the fact that 64-bit machines, unlike their 32-bit brethren, can directly address more than 4GB of memory
