In its bid to clamp down on rampant software piracy, Microsoft Tuesday announced a global initiative under the banner of ‘Global Anti-Piracy Awareness Day’ that will include educating consumers as well as enforcing legal action.
Even though the initiative was rolled out in 49 countries, Microsoft’s director of intellectual property in Australia told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper that the Redmond-based software giant would not be able to solve the problem fully ever.
“Are we able to solve absolutely every problem? No… there are some people who will always not want to pay for something and there are always people who will want to exploit,” she said in an interview to the Australian newspaper.
The program, launched in 49 countries spanning six continents, aims to combat the trade of pirated and counterfeit software. Read the rest of this entry »

Video: Laptop Hunters $1000 – Lauren Gets an HP Pavilion
Microsoft recently released an ad on buying a PC. An ad is introducing Lauren. She is looking to purchase a laptop with nice performance “speed”, comfortable keyboard, a 17″ screen for under $1,000. The camera is chasing her travels around town and, of course, greets her outside of an Apple store. As Lauren exits the building in dismay that the only Mac within her budget has a tiny 13″ screen, she says, “I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person”. The Windows world is, of course, very welcoming and Lauren winds up finding an HP laptop at a nearby Best Buy that suits her needs. She keeps the laptop and gets to keep the change.
In this challenging times of our economy, a computer buyer is searching for quality performance at reasonable prices. Therefore Microsoft offers a better fit for a customer’s needs, for their lifestyle and for their budget versus the competition that’s out there today.

Starting Sept 23, 2008, users who fail to activate or fail validation will experience a plain black desktop background and a persistent notice on their desktop near the system tray. The persistent notice indicates that they may be a victim of software counterfeiting. The background can be reset by the user to another background, but every 60 minutes the desktop will be reset to the plain black background to reinforce the message that is in the persistent desktop notice. The background will continue to be reset to the plain black color and the persistent notice will remain until a genuine copy of Windows is installed and validated.
Who will see it
Users of Windows XP Professional only —- we are not targeting Windows XP Home, XP Media Center Edition, or XP Tablet PC Edition.

icrosoft is to offer XP on ultra low-cost desktop machines, extending the deal it initially struck for budget laptops.
Microsoft announced back in April that it would continue to sell XP Home edition for another two years on ultra cheap laptops such as the Eee PC, due to the fact that they don’t have the specification to run Vista.
However, the company has now expanded that offer to the emerging class of low-cost desktops such as Asus Eee box. The software giant says it is working with over 20 PC makers to deliver "nettop" devices, including the big five of HP, Dell, Asus, Acer and Lenovo.
Steve Ballmer recently admitted that Microsoft could reconsider its decision to phase out Windows XP on 30 June if customers made enough noise on the issue, though with Windows 7 now expected in 2009 the company may feel the market would be too cluttered with three distinct Microsoft-branded consumer operating systems floating around.
