Windows 7 is all about simplicity and that’s why Windows 7 will simply be called Windows, Microsoft announced today.
Mike Nash, corporate vice president for Windows product management at Microsoft, had the honor of announcing the official name. Nash noted that he is “very excited about the opportunity to tell [people] more about Windows 7 in the coming weeks.”
According to Nash, the name “Windows 7” is simple: The company decided against a date in the name (such as “Windows 2008”) since the company does not ship a new Windows every year and it decided against an “aspirational” name (such as “XP” or “Vista”) since it is not really an entirely new release, but just an enhancement over Vista. “Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7″ just makes sense,” Nash said.
What’s New?
Here are some of the new features that you will find with Windows 7:
1. Faster and easier. Windows 7 was built around your feedback, so you’ll see a lot of things you’ve asked for. You asked us to make everyday tasks faster and easier, make your PC work the way you want it to, and make new things possible.
2. Improved taskbar and full screen previews. The taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to switch between the applications you’ve got open. In Windows 7 you can set the order in which the icons appear and they’ll stay put.
3. Jumplists. With Windows 7, It’s a handy way to quickly reach the files you’ve been working with. To see the files you’ve used recently, just right click on the icon on your taskbar. So right-clicking on the Word icon will show your most recent Word documents. Plus, if there are other files you want to keep handy, you can just pin them to the Jump List.
4. Windows Live. With Windows 7, some features previously included in the operating system are now available for download through Windows Live Essentials, a set of free applications available for your PC and supported by Windows 7. You can download Windows Live Messenger, Photo Gallery, Mail, Writer, Movie Maker, and more. With these great applications, you can improve your Windows experience, and benefit from faster delivery of these features and services.
I think there’s a lot more of features that the Windows 7 will offer.

Office 2007 a retail Hit
Office 2007 on Windows is selling at roughly double the rate its predecessor, Office 2003, did in its first months after release, NPD analyst Chris Swenson said Wednesday. “Any way you cut it, the first six months, or a similar January-through-July period, or the first week or even the first month [of sales], no matter how you slice it, Office 2007 is selling much better than Office 2003 did,” said Swenson.
And even though Office 2004 for Mac is far from new, Swenson said, it’s also contributing to Microsoft’s suite success. “Mac Office represents about 20 percent of all Office sales in U.S. retail. At first, that seemed really surprising, but if I’m switching to Mac, there are a few key [software] products I’m going to buy, and Office is one of them.”

HP Upgrades Entry-Level Storage Product
The new product, called the StorageWorks XP20000 and announced Sept. 10, is similar to its predecessor in many ways, including the ability to scale to 240 drives and more than 69TB of raw storage capacity. Also, like the XP10000, the XP20000 offers 24-by-7 reliability with no single point of failure and redundant hot-swappable components, RAID technology and a full suite of software.
Where the XP20000 takes a leap forward is in its flexibility and modular design, said James Wilson, HP’s XP product manager. The boards in the XP20000 are half the size of those in previous generations, and there are twice as many slots for those boards.
“It gives customers more configurability and flexibility in terms of price, making it less expensive and more flexible on the low end,” Wilson said.

Microsoft Office Has Pull
In 2004, FN Manufacturing’s Ed Benincasa began evaluating alternatives to Microsoft Office. In fact, he worked with eWEEK Labs to perform a side-by-side, user-based comparison of OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 and Microsoft Office 2003, to see whether an open-source option would meet his organization’s needs. Benincasa and his staff later tested the ThinkFree suite and Version 2.0 of OpenOffice, as well as Linux on the desktop.
But, despite the Office alternatives’ many attractive qualities, there was one requirement they just couldn’t meet in the end: file format compatibility.
“FNM was working very hard at finding alternatives to MS Office,” said Benincasa, vice president of MIS, in Columbia, S.C. “We finally dropped the project … [because] no matter how good the other applications may be, unless they are compatible and can read/write to the MS format, they just cannot be used as the only office application. Most of the issues were with page formatting, image integration, etc., that the documents just did not convert correctly.”
