I am still having some problems understanding the new UI, but people who start getting familiar with it raves on it.

Microsoft Licenses Office 2007 UI

Microsoft has done a cool and smart thing, and decided to let (almost) everyone use the Office 2007 UI.

Office 2007 features an entirely innovative UI; while it takes cues from some previous ideas, it is hard for anyone to point out any previous software which uses even a similar UI system, and Microsoft could have easilly copyrighted and maybe even patented the entire system, and kept it entirely exclusive for a long time. Even smarter, they could have limited use of it only to Windows applications.

Instead, they decided to free it.

One of the additional feature of Microsoft Office 2007 is the Mini toolbas or so called “Floatie”, whys is so called Floatie? Is it because when a users selects a text, word, a sentence or a pharagraph within a document, unobtrusively it displays a small toolbar “mini toolbar” near the mouse pointer. Nearly anything the user does other than use the Mini toolbar dismisses it. For example, if the user moves the cursor away, hits the scroll wheel or a key, or presses a mouse button, the Mini toolbar disappears. But, if the user moves the cursor toward the Mini toolbar, it comes into full view and offers the most common formatting options such as Bold, Italic, Color, and Center. In this way, users are actually more efficient at using the top formatting commands in the product regardless of the primary tab of the Ribbon currently displayed.

Note: The Mini toolbar or the “Floatie” cannot be modify or customize it’s functions.

Contextaul Tools

The Contextaul Tools are the command organized also in chunks and ribbon. It is a command basically associated with specific object such as Tables, Pictures, Text Boxes, etc. So whenever you select a certain object that have more functionality thier will be a tab on the ribbon will appear with specific command organize in one specific area to address an object. Live Preview and Galleries

Live Preview is a special function that will automaticaly show the immediate result or effect of the document without applying it. As you hover over your mouse a choice in a gallery, the documents will automatically previews the action. This can stop and eliminate the frustrating repetitive cycles of clicks trying to get the right format or result of a document. See Preview

Galleries are the new design that works together with the ribbon, provides a visual way of functionality that shows the result of the command, but not the command themselves. People can be successfulusing the galleries without understanding what they’re doing behind the scene. See Preview

2007 Microsoft Office code named Office “12″ introduces the new way of working with office application. With a new look, a new intuitive User interface, a top design goal which makes the product easier to use, improving the efficiency of people using the application, easier to discover more of the functionality and navigation of its functions people need, and support creation of great looking documents are just some of the features of 2007 Microsoft Office. Office “12″ helps people to be more productive and efficient.

The “Ribbon”
The Ribbon is basically the primary replacement for menus and toolbars. Also a Modeless UI Design for eay browsing. A ribbon has each tab organized into several “chunks”, it’s “chunk” contains related controls anf functionality.

I normally send spreadsheets to other people. Sometimes, you don’t want them to see your formulas, only the values. So what I normally do is that I used copy and copy it to a different workbook, but only copying the values.

The problem is that you have to keep the original sheet as your formulas has disappeared. Here’s a tip I got from Jerry Liao on how to hide your Excel formula.

1. Select the formula cells you want to hide, and go to Format/Cells.
2. On the Protection tab, select the Hidden check box, and click OK.
3. Go to Tools / Protection / Protect Sheet, and click OK.
4. You can also set a password to prevent others from unprotecting the sheet.
