64 bit Windows finally Taking Off?

Could 64-bit Windows finally be taking off? | A blog by Ina Fried - CNET News.com

The trend is also evident by looking at the kinds of systems being sold at retailers. In its circular this Sunday most of the desktops and half of the dozen notebook models being advertised by Office Depot had the 64-bit version of Windows pre-installed.

The mix was similar in Circuit City’s advertisement, with nearly all of the desktops and many of the notebooks running 64-bit Windows

Gateway, for example, is shifting to an entirely 64-bit Windows lineup on its desktops, starting with the back-to-school shopping season.

It’s a dramatic shift even from last quarter, in which only about 5 percent of its total desktop and notebook models had a 64-bit OS installed. For the third quarter, 95 percent of desktop models and 30 percent of notebook systems will have a 64-bit OS.

Among the factors leading to the shift are the fact that 64-bit machines, unlike their 32-bit brethren, can directly address more than 4GB of memory

Microsoft to produce new version of XP for Eee PC

Asus now offers Eee PC buyers a choice between Linux and Windows. So just how good (or how bad) is the little laptop when it comes pre-loaded with XP?

Asus has big plans for its little laptop and to the dismay of purists
and Penguinistas, those plans centre on Windows. The company expects to
sell five million Eee PCs this year, and Asus CEO Jerry Shen predicts
that “about 60 percent of these” will run XP rather than the Xandros OS
with which the mini-note debuted.

Of course, Eeenthusiasts have been installing XP and assorted Linux
versions (most commonly Ubuntu, for which there’s now a bespoke version
known as eeeXubuntu) even since this pint-sized portable was released.
But that’s not a path for the mainstream, many of whom are attracted by
the Eee PC’s price, weight and form factor but wary of the fact that it
doesn’t have that familiar face of Windows, and nor can it run the same
software they already use day to day.Read the rest of this entry…

We love Windows !

People never said they love their Coke.  But when Coke tried to come up with a new formula they rebelled.

In the tech world, you hear people say they love Mac, or they are passionate about Linux.  Very seldom in Windows — it was just the operating system that was there, and worked.  Now, people are saying they really want it!

Their passion is Windows XP - Yahoo! News

No matter how hard Microsoft works to persuade people to embrace Vista, some just can’t be wowed. They complain about Vista’s hefty hardware requirements, its less-than-peppy performance, occasional incompatibility with other programs and devices and frequent, irritating security pop-up windows.

For them, the impending disappearance of XP computers from retailers, and the phased withdrawal of technical support in coming years, is causing a minor panic.

SMB leads in Vista Adoption

SMBs grasp Vista nettle | Channel Register

Windows Vista appears to be gaining ground among organisations, with small businesses (SMBs) proving particularly keen to adopt the software giant’s latest operating system, according to a new report.

US reseller CDW Corp tracked Vista adoption from 31 October to 7 November 2007 and found that 53 per cent of those firms that had tested or implemented the OS were SMBs.

Of course, one explanation for the sudden spike in popularity among SMBs could be that they are less likely to have IT departments that will test and advise on products. They are also more likely to buy on an ad hoc basis, from the likes of Dell or CompUSA, and will use whatever is supplied on the machine.

Microsoft to ease XP activation with SP3

Microsoft Corp. will change how users activate Windows XP when Service Pack 3 launches in the first half of 2008, a company white paper said.

New installations of Windows XP SP3 will give users the same 30-day grace period currently offered to Windows Vista customers before they’re required to enter a product activation key, the 25-character code that proves the copy is legitimate.Computerworld

Microsoft ‘Get Genuine Windows Agreement’

Is your company facing licensing compliance issues specifically for Windows XP Pro? Have you found out that you are a victim of counterfeit copies of Windows XP Pro?

Not so long ago, Microsoft introduced Pinoy Genuine Kit for those who are looking for ways to comply Windows XP Pro licensing. This promo ended last June 30, 2007.

Still with the objective to ease out client’s concerns on legalizing Windows XP Pro, Microsoft has introduced Get Genuine Windows Agreement (WWGA)- a volume licensing for Windows XP Pro. This applies for customers who have been using non genuine Windows XP Pro.

With a minimum of 5 Windows XP Pro legalization requirements, Get Genuine Windows Agreement is applicable for you. Though this is under Volume Licensing, WWGA is non transferable. But unlike OEM, management of licenses can be better achieved because you will only manage one Agreement and one Order Confirmation. No need now to manage Certificates of Authenticity, installers and EULAs.
