Cebu to host major int’l confab next year

CEBU will host next year’s Philippine Meetings, Incentive Travels, Conventions and Exhibitions (PhilMICE) convention at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), organizers said over the weekend.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia made the official announcement on the third day of this year’s four-day PhilMICE Convention held at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center last Saturday.

“The 2011 conference has been dubbed ‘Cebu: Top Island Destination. See you in Cebu!,” Garcia said. Read more…

Gullas museum to open Wednesday

The Don Vicente and Inday Pining Rivera Gullas Ang Tipiganan Sa Mga Kanta Ug Kinaiyang Sugbuanon Museum will officially open to the public on Wednesday, February 3.

The museum, situated at the corner V. Gullas Street and D. Jakosalem Street, will be open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

PRA-Cebu to raise funds to push “green” advocacy

The Philippine Retailers Association (PRA-Cebu) aims to raise funds to support its “green retailing” advocacy, to make Cebu the ultimate pioneer in pushing “green initiatives” among retail players.

PRA-Cebu will not only push for the “Every Bag Counts” campaign program, which will encourage retailers to use biodegradable shopping bags, but also the holistic approach of implementing “green” operation of retailers.

Condos for out-of-town students in Cebu lined up this year

A Mid-Rise condominium along General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City catering to out-of-town students will be launched in the second quarter of this year.

Jose Ma. H. Gianzon, Fuente Triangle Realty Development Corp. president, said the City Loft Mango project will provide a more affordable alternative to parents who send their children to Cebu for schooling since they don’t have to pay caretakers to rent rooms for their kids.

Arroyo inaugurates Cansaga Bay bridge

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday inaugurated the P2.3 billion Cansaga Bay Bridge, which is one of the major development projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways in the Metro Cebu area.

The President is very proud and thankful that the project was completed with funding from the national government without incurring any foreign loans.

Arroyo said the bridge, which is a key component of the North Coastal Road, is one of her flagship projects. More…

Lato to represent Cebu in China scholarship

Cebuano Cris Evert B. Lato once again brings pride and honor to Cebu as she represents the province in the 2nd Gokongwei Brothers Foundation-China Scholarship Program (GBF-CSP) the second semester in Shanghai, China.

Sinulog, people’s cooperation in governance impress Belgians

The people’s participation in local governance has impressed Belgian officials on a sister-city visit to Cebu City, that the practice has given them an idea on how to reach out to their own people.

They were also mesmerized by the Sinulog, which celebrated its 30th year exactly a week ago.

Kortrijk City Deputy Mayor Alain Cnudde said they have never seen anything like the grand parade.

“They told us it was special; and I have to admit it’s better than special. I have never seen a fiesta like (it) before,” he told the Cebu City Council last Wednesday, three days before the delegation left yesterday. Read more…

It’s nice music but the way it’s played is somewhat not classy. People often play it like a joke or comedy act. So we thought what if we get that music, play it like it’s world-class music and maybe people will perceive it differently, and they do.” – Wilson Ng, founder of the Asian Troubadors.

More than 1800 audience attended on the three shows during the repeat performance of the Passionata: A Cultural Heritage Celebration held at the Cinema 1 of SM City Cebu last January 16. The celebration is in honor of Sto. Niño as part of the celebration of the Sinulog. The crowd made a standing ovation the the finale part. It was such a stunning performance made by Cebuano artists composed of the Asian Troubadours, Cebu Chamber Singers, Mandaue Children’s Choir under Maestro Dennis Sugarol. Dances were interpreted by the Mandaue Children’s Choir under Nino Matillano and the Knapsack Dancers under the choreography of Miss Cinbeth Orellano.

Included in the crowd were over 80 Balikbayans, including official visitors of Cebu City from Yeosu Korea, Belgium, and the Visayan Society of Las Vegas Nevada. Spotted on the show were also prominent businessmen, and also acclaimed Visayan performer Raki Vega, as well as the five winners of the Miss Cebu 2010 contest. The audience showed particularly the largest applause for the last three numbers – Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana o Fortuna as well as Mandaue Children’s Choir performance of Sinulog.

Russians give tourism in Cebu a headstart

The tourism industry has gotten another boost as Cebu’s first batch of foreign tourists for the year arrived yesterday.

About 167 Russians arrived at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport at 8:10 a.m. aboard a chartered Tupolev 124 plane from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, a tour operator said.

Cecil Sa-a, Cebu branch manager of Blue Horizons Travel and Tours, Inc. – the tourists’ ground handler – said it was the sixth chartered flight from Russia that they have handled. Continue…

Cebu creativity recognized

Proving once again that Cebuano creativity and craftsmanship exceed or are at par with those of Manila, two Cebuano companies bagged separate awards at the 50th Manila FAME International show in October.

Obra Cebuana’s yellow low-back chair made of rattan bagged the Manila FAME’s Katha Award for Best Home Furnishing, while a cuff made of aluminum and shells by Bon-Ace Fashion Tools Inc. grabbed the Katha Award for Best Fashion Accessory.
