Time and Opportunity

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock
I hear the sound of the clock
Counting every second, every minute
The cuckoo would be in less than a minute

What ar e you doing with your time?
Are you raising like hell for a deadline?
Or you are just simply sulking,
Waiting for your boss, coming?

As for me my dear friend,
I have had a relaxing weekend
In the office, I’m back
To break-a-bone for deals to crack.

Stormy weather, stormy life
But I got none to gripe
For the past months Ive been gifted
With opportunities and sales lifted.

Now can you guess
What is my work, my prowess?
Or you will just sit there, sulking
Spending the day thinking?

Now what can i say to you my dear
Is that you have a family to rear
Life is too short to waste
So go ahead and make a base!

Come now, get up from where you are,
For I know that somewhere not very far
An opportunity is waiting for your to grab
Or others will simply take it like a crab

Think of your dreams
Far from your reach it seams?
Then get up and work it out
You’ve got dreams, so stick it out!

What am I saying
What am I talking about?
Am I talking with sense
Or is this another crap?

I am telling you dear friend
That life is beautiful
Though it’s sometimes awful
But you always have a choice my friend

I used to just sulk in a corner
Not working, whatever
Till a realized that if we work for our dreams
It is possible to reach, it seems

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock
The clock is ticking
What are you currently doing?
Come, let’s grab the opportunity to reach our dreams!!!

Cebuano Or Tagalog?

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Pres. Gloria ArroyoI, being a native speaker of Cebuano, am proud to use Cebuano language all the time when in casual conversation, except of course when I’m talking to a non-native speaker which, by then, I use English. Why not Tagalog instead?

Then why should I use Tagalog when I’m not Tagalog? And yes, I’m not an American or English either but I use English. I use English for good reason. It is the universal language spoken in international commerce and trade and I don’t think I need to elaborate further. So why should I bother to learn Tagalog?

In my freshman year at UP Cebu, for the first time in its history, the UP Cebu administration scrapped the Filipino subject from the general curriculum as a sign of protest against using it as a medium of instruction in all schools in the country. And no one would be happy when being told to speak a certain language and force it to you when you don’t even have enough mastery of that language? We don’t object at all if Cebuano is used as a medium of instruction in Cebu schools because it is Cebu’s native language. So should an Ilocano be used in Ilocos region, so on and so forth.

I don’t find anything wrong in having a common language that would bridge our understanding towards one another because of our ethnic diversity. But it has to evolve over time from within a solid framework of linguistic structure before a common language is achieved. It should not be imposed by way of authority. It should come and evolve naturally through constant use so that all ethnic groups, from Batanes to Tawi-Tawi, can communicate to each other without the so-called language barrier.

To develop a national language that seek to unify all major ethnic groups in the country, the government should look beyond the four corners of imperial Manila and its environs whose language is Tagalog, the basis of the current so-called Filipino language. Tagalog maybe a dominant language spoken by some 21 million people but its speakers are concentrated only in Manila and Southern Tagalog provinces, or less than 25% of the country’s total population. This creates a major backlash among other major ethnic groups in other parts of the country which now permeates all over the islands. The imposition of Tagalog as a national language even creates sociocultural and sociopolitical hegemony over other ethnic groups which are even far more superior in many other ways than some other ethnic Tagalogs.

To resolve this lingering dilemma over the choice of a national language in the country, the government should form a commission composed of scholars in linguistics to effectively come up with the desired language system that would truly unite all major ethnic groups in the archipelago.

Cebuano or Tagalog? Angay natong gamiton ang pinulungan diin maoy nasabtan sa kadaghanan.

Suzuki All-New Grand Vitara

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

New Grand Vitara Here’s a picture of the New Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV. It’s got a 145hp 2.0L 4-Cylinder engine plus, it’s got REAL 4-wheel drive! One of the innovations that Suzuki came up with is the integration of a ladder frame into the monocoque body construction, giving it a more car-like ride without sacrificing durability and body strength that a real 4WD vehicle needs to conquer the urban as well as off road environments. Watch out for it soon in Cebu!

Go Nuts Donuts To Open In Cebu

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Donut WarDo you think you will grow old and die seeing only two donut giants slugging it out for supremacy in Cebu? And you think your Dunkin’ Donuts shall win the fight while Mister Donuts shall fade away to oblivion in local donut history? Think again!

Another player in the offing is raring to give a tough fight. The Manila-based Go Nuts Donut is heading to Cebu with a determination to nab a share in the market which the two current rivals are unwilling to give without indomitable resistance. The donut war in Cebu is given a fresh start with this new contender which is to locate in the new Banilad Town Center.

Quite interestingly, the franchise owner of the first Cebu outlet of Go Nuts Donut is the same owner and operator of Cebu’s biggest funeral parlor, Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapels, Inc. (CMCI) and RSD Resources, a casket manufacturer! Hmm, I sense an exciting fight in the ring! Who will lord it over? Who shall be the ‘Lord of the Rings’?

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Cebu is well on its way to become Asia’s newest IT hub with the addition of more IT parks and buildings to accommodate the influx of more IT-related companies who want to locate here.

At present, there are only three PEZA-registered IT zones in the city: Asiatown IT Park in Cebu Civic Center in Lahug, HDWF-WTCI IT Tower in the Cebu Business Park, and JY Square IT Center along Salinas Drive in Lahug.

With the surging demand in space for call centers and other IT-related businesses in recent years and a projected increase of locators and investors in the province, ten more developers are now applying for accreditation with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
