Why Lapu-Lapu Statue Doesn’t Have Tattooes?

Funny, isn’t it?

This subject aroused my curiosity to tackle a little bit about this historical lapse when I read an article in Freeman online publication about the Cebuano body. It talked about the tattooed bodies of the pre-Hispanic Cebuanos.

In the history books, Lapu-Lapu and other natives of Zugbu, now known as Cebu, were portrayed as ‘pintados’ or tattooed ones. It was believed that the natives painted their bodies as a sign of gallantry and a status symbol. If indeed it is a sign of valour and bravery, then why do Lapu-Lapu’s statues not bear any tattoo on his body? Was it intentional or a mental lapse?

Value of A Voice

I read this article over and over again. A prize-winning essay of Jonathan Rodriguez Unchuan of Cebu ’s Sacred Heart School for Boys during the Visayas Region, “4th Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition.” He has somehow touched my inner spirit. He spoke with dignity and full of courage.

His speech paralleled with reality. The importance of a voice. Something to be lived with. Profound and concise thoughts which everybody ought to reflect on themselves. It is not for somebody but for every Filipino who fell asleep for so long. Wake up and let your voice be heard.

With not much ado, let us listen to Jonathan Rodriguez Unchuan as he renders his piece entitled, “A VALUE OF A VOICE“:

Love Of Good Food Is Cafe Laguna’s Passport To Success

Home-grown restaurant chain Cafe Laguna was not an overnight success so to speak. It was started in 1979 as a small carenderia (eatery) by an enterprising Julita Urbina in a 4-door rented apartment building where the family had their residence.

The Urbinas came to Cebu in late 70’s from Manila as permanent immigrants. They found out that Cebu at that time had a very few restaurants, thus too few options to choose from whenever they needed to dine out. Going to a fine restaurant then was a tedious task, having to drive far from their home in Lahug to uptown Cebu where good restaurants were concentrated. Their love of good food and dining out too often prompted Julita Urbina to set up a small carenderia in their rented apartment unit.

Fuente O!

Fuente OsmeñaThe Osmeña Rotunda, or more popularly known as Fuente or Fuente Osmeña, is the central business district of the old uptown Cebu.

Here, within a radius of 200 meters, you can find modern shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, schools, 24/7 convenience stores, and entertainment centers, some of which are open 24 hours. The focal point of the district is the Fuente Osmeña circle. It is a beautiful park planted to shade trees where everyone can have a leisurely stroll around a fountain encircling a monument in memory of Cebu’s grand old man, Sergio Osmeña Sr., the president of the Philippine commonwealth government during the WWII. Four of the city’s major streets converge here - Osmeña Blvd. from the east and west, Gen. Maxilom Ave. from the north, B. Rodriguez St. from the south and F. Ramos St. from northeast.

The Lure of Larsian

No othe place in the city evokes of that genuinely Cebuano dining by the street but Larsian. I didn’t do a research as to how Larsian got its name, no matter how intriguing as it sounds to me. So I don’t really know if Larsian is an eponym of this eating place where everyone can have his meal literally skewered, save for the puso (rice cooked in a tiny diamond-shaped basket made of coco leaves).

As dusk draws near, Fuente Osmeña Circle starts to pulsate with night activities. Neon lights flicker in sync with the fast-paced tempo of the people milling around the vicinity. Due west of the rotunda, makeshift stalls begin sprouting like the proverbial mushroom, only faster, in an otherwise deserted street during the day. The street is actually an access road to Chong Hua Hospital from the rotunda.
