Monday, September 5th, 2005

Check-in CounterNorkis has become a household name for many years now. It is synonymous with motorcycle. In turn, motorcycle is synonymous with the brand name Yamaha, at least, here in Cebu.

The year was 1962 when Norberto B. Quisumbing and his wife started out a small business with a meager capital, notwithstanding limited business experience to boot. But it did not deter him to do what he thought was just the right thing to do to make a living. He was the man with a vision and an oozing elan for entrepreneurial endeavor. And that was the perfect requisite to a successful business, as it turned out, judging on his many achievements through the years. Thus, the Norkis Trading Co., Inc. was born.

He was the man with a vision and an oozing elan for entrepreneural endeavor. And that was the perfect requisite to a successful business, as it turned out, judging on his many achievements through the years. Thus, the Norkis Trading Co., Inc. was born.

The newly-formed company clinched the exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute Yamaha motorcycles in the Philippines the same year his company was formed. Being a hard-working person as he has been, he never got tired of travelling all over the islands to scout for prospective dealers for his motorcycles, often several weeks away from home and his family.

The hard work definitely paid off as Norkis Trading now has a network of over 1,200 branches, dealers and service centers across the country, boasting a strong market presence in most towns and cities, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Today, Norkis Group of Companies has grown into a diversified company with 34 subsidiaries in three main divisions: The Norkis Group, Summa, and Eagle. The business include, apart from the motorcyle, furniture and metal crates, agribusiness, metal fabrication, engineering works, real estate development, insurance, lending, pawnshop, printing, money transfer and forex exchange, travel, computer training, and most recently, multicab assembly.

NQJr, as he is fondly called, may be one of the most successful businessmen in the country today, but he is still as humble as ever to accept that, only through hard work and lots of sacrifices, can anyone be successful. A philantrophist by nature, in 1988, he set up PUNLA, a nationwide scholarship program for poor but gifted public school elementary graduates who want to pursue secondary education in some of the best schools in the country. He also instituted FILIPINO, Inc. for Filipino Institute for the Promotion of Integrity and Nobility Inc., aimed at inculcating values and good work ethics.

He is also involved in lots of civic organization activities such as community development programs of barangays to foster responsible citizenry towards nation building.

Corporate Leader

With an indomitable spirit to excel and succeed in every endeavor that he’s taking, he devotes so much time to nurture his fledgling business into an industrial giant that it is today. A man with extraordinary skills in promoting both moral and corporate values, strong determination, uncompromised commitment, and respectability.

Through the years of unfailing dedication to hard work, he reaped a string of awards and recognitions that speak of his industriousness, courage, kindness and generosity as a businessman. He is an Outstanding Countryside Investor, a Great Cebuano and One of the 100 Most Notable Cebuanos of the Century, the pioneering president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, founder of Cebu, Inc., organizer of the Round Table for Business Leaders, Mandaue Jaycees’ Most Outstanding Businessman of the Year, Perlas Awardee in Business and Industry, and Cebu News Correspondence’s Executive of the Year Awardee.

More Investors - Higher Employment Rate

Monday, September 5th, 2005

With Mandaue City’s drive in luring investors, both local & foreign - employment opportunities are expected to increase.

By giving big tax incentives, & by simplifying the processing of business applications - Mandaue City is hopeful for more investors.

Business eyed are those in Information Technology (IT), and those in tourism sectors (e.g. hotels, restaurants..).. In fact, Jonkie Ouano (son of Mandaue City Mayor) & a City Hall Consultant is reportedly meeting with officials of eTelecare, & People Support, for possible investments..

I’m hopeful that Mandaue City would succeed in getting more investors to come in, because in doing so, there will be more chances of employment for the people.
