Cedf-IT, Ready To Help Teachers

Monday, September 19th, 2005

The ITTA or Information Technology Teachers Association, a faculty development program of the Educational for Information Technology (Cedf-it) under Romil Jose Fernandez, project officer, declares that they are reaching out teachers from other parts of Cental Visayas to help them learn about IT.

ITTA offers information technology (IT) training to teachers in the tertiary level, the first batch of whom are now on their fourth semester.

Fernandez said most of the subjects taken by the teachers can be credited to their master’s degree programs in IT at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and the University of Cebu (UC), whose Banilad campus is the site of the academy.

Pungko-Pungko: Once Tasted, Always Wanted

Monday, September 19th, 2005

Dried squidCebuanos love to eat and I think everyone will agree with this. From eating out in the most exquisite and fine restaurants to eating out in the busy streets of Colon and Carbon, Cebuanos just can’t get enough of every food they can chomp on. If you happen to be a true-blue Cebuano then you surely have an experience or at least heard of pungko-pungko . It’s hard to trace its history though, but one thing for sure it must be of Cebuano origin.

Pungko-pungko as we fondly call it (or if you’re a bit classy, ‘dirty food’ or if you’re a bit radical and funny ‘cholera’), is a term for eating on a squat. The vendors simply hawk their wares in a basket along crowded neighborhoods such as near big schools and busy streets where pedestrian traffic is heavy. The term pungko-pungko came into being because the customers simply squat while they consume their food. No utensils or cutleries or even plates, save only for a knife which is used to cut the puso (essentially, a cooked rice stuffed in small baskets made of young coco leaves).

    Alien

    Monday, September 19th, 2005

Out of the corner of my eye I could see the blades, sharp and glistening near my nape, and ready to get the job done. Could she be my death’s messenger? Undaunted, I was unfazed. No worries for I just had my sins confessed. “Sir, would you have a crew cut?” My mind shot back to reality past its wild imaginings.

Vanity cares! Her hand was soft yet fast and dexterious. My forehead gleamed as my bangs fell one by one down the drape off my shoulders and off my ego. Could she be an alien? I felt her front pressed upon my back. Could she be an amazon, chancing upon my helplessness? I closed my eyes; feeling good.

“May I request for the blonde lady barber who cut my hair last week”, I asked the counter teller. “I’m sorry sir, but we don’t have a lady barber here”, came the reply, dismaying my nerves and ending my lust for more.
