PGMA Looks On As Nelson Pacalso Snatches Gold From The Vietnamese
His demise was pre-eminent in the last 30 seconds in the regulation play against the tough Vietnamese opponent NV Toan in karatedo men’s individual +65 kg kumite. The score 1-4, to his horror. Then he heard the thunderous applause of the crowd with a wild cheer . How could they be so cruel seeing their compatriot in the threshhold of losing his game. Or so he thought.
He was wrong. The crowd’s attention was on the very important person making her grand entrance into the Mandaue City Cultural & Sports Complex complete with full force of entourage of local officials. Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has dropped by the venue to cheer on her fellow countrymen fighting it out for glory, together with Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeus Ouano.
Nelson Pacalso’s pride was on the line. How embarassing it would be if he lets loose of his grip to the victory line that seems to elude him by now in front of the President? He thought for a second and might have said to himself he should make her proud of him. So, as might as he could, he began to unleash his deadly punches and kicks like it was his last hurrah shaving off his 3-point deficit to end the regulation in a tie forcing a one-minute extension.
Then his luck seemed to switch side, this time in his favor as he made a straight punch to Toan’s body making a point in the process to seal his victory. The crowd went wild celebrating his come-from-behind victory.
The President even surprised him when she awarded him his gold medal.
