An Enduring Modern Symbol For Cebu

What if Cebu builds a structure that is uniquely Cebuano in character? What if Cebu builds the megadome and keep its original design so as to distinguish itself from other modern structures? What if Cebu makes its own symbolic structure that is both contemporary and historic?

Cebu is arguably the country’s most popular brand name. It’s the name associated with the finest guitar in the country. It’s the name associated with the finest mango from the Philippines. It’s the name associated with the best lechon (roast pig) the country has ever known. It’s the name used to identify the best furniture in the world with ultra-modern yet contemporary look. It’s the name of the country’s oldest city. It’s the name of the tropical island in the Pacific.

But how would we associate Cebu in the internet age?

The Magellan’s cross may be an enduring symbol of Cebu but we need something more contemporary or something new that would identify Cebu in the inernet age or the modern age. Cebu is inhabited by people of extraordinary talents. Visual artists. Architects. Engineers. Luthiers. Poets.

These group of people can create an extraordinary symbol that would put Cebu in the league of cities with ultra-modern architectural wonders and visual arts. Singapore has a lot to show off with the latest addition, The Esplanade’s Theaters on the Bay. Hong Kong has dozens of them - 2 IFC and Disneyland are prime examples. Bilbao in Spain has Gugenheim museum. Shanghai. Tokyo. Dubai. Kuala Lumpur.

Cebu can be a showcase of unique Cebuano visual arts and architectural masterpiece if these people dare to open up their mind with the support of our local government.
