Cebu Youthfest 2006
Tourism has been one of Cebu’s biggest industries for years. In fact, Cebu is the premier tourist destination in the Philippines with 40 percent of the total foreign visitors to the country come to the province for its world-class beach resorts and dive sites and historical landmarks that are abound all over the islands.
But without proper communication tool, tourists would seldom venture into new unchartered territory without getting first-hand information that would guide them throught their journey. Effective communication is the key to successful tourism promotion. Tourism promotion shouldn’t rely on glossy brochures and posters or cheeky ads on television alone.
Although they are effective communication tools, they are not a guarantee to attract first-time tourists until they would ask someone from the place who can give them vital information about the place. Oftentimes locals don’t really care how important is the information they convey to the visitors.
Come February 2 and 3, the Department of Tourism 7 will present a one-of-a-kind event that would address specifically the importance of tourism advocacy through speech or public speaking among the youth sector. ALL students from different colleges and universities as well as young professionals from companies all over the country are urged to join the first-ever Cebu Youthfest 2006 February 2-3 at the SM City Cebu Trade Hall.
Young people are encouraged to take on an active role in the tourism promotion of the country and change their view on tourism as an industry. With the theme: “Empowering Speech Independence and Shaping a Youth Tourism Advocacyâ€, it merges tourism fora with extemporaneous and essay writing contests that revolve around the context of tourism as everybody’s business so that public speaking takes a vital role in tourism awareness campaigns and promotions.
At 10:00 a.m. on the first day of the 2-day event, a photo exhibit will be launched dubbed ‘I Love Cebu’. The exhibit is a showcase of Cebu’s dynamic tourism industry that will feature its tourist destinations, its people and various products that contribute significantly to its local economy.
Extemporaneous Speaking and Essay Writing contests are set after the Public Speaking lecture by Mcknight.
Cebu Youthfest 2006 is presented by the DOT and Episodes Pro in cooperation with the Commission on Higher Education (Ched), SM City Cebu, Rotary Club of Cebu Business District (RCCBD) and Pepsi.
