Cebu, Let’s Help Landslide Victims in Leyte

Cebuanos, by nature, are kind, generous and sympathetic. By these virtues, I would like to take the opportunity to call on our fellow Cebuanos here and from all corners of the globe to extend assistance, however small, to the victims of the latest tragedy that hit the town of St. Bernard in Southern Leyte late last week.

Flashed on television screens a few hours after it happened, the catastrophe of epic proportions was watched by millions around the world which prompted the global community to send their humanitarian and financial assistance to the country.

The two-week continuous rain for most of the Eastern Visayas region to which Southern Leyte belongs, had spurred sporadic floodings and landslides across the region. St. Bernard was one of the worst hit towns in Southern Leyte and barangay Guinsaugon was not lucky enough. Guinsaugon was at the mercy of the catastrophic erosion of one side of the mountain that sent hundreds of thousands of tons of mud and boulders down the slope that buried the entire barangay of Guinsaugon, wiping it out completely from the map.
