DOT-7 Urges Investors To Build More Hotels in Cebu

Cebu is expected to see more tourists coming this year, due in part to the ASEAN Summit in December. Aside from the main summit, hundreds of ministerial-level meetings of the 10 ASEAN-member countries will also be held in Cebu starting this month so hotels in the metro, especially de luxe resorts, will see brisk business.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 is also anticipating for increased tourist arrivals from hereon particularly from Korea and Japan after its media blitz and its participation in travel expositions late last year in these countries. It also tied up with the major travel agencies in Japan to visit the country for its wellness tourism program.

SM City Cebu Sets Expansion

SM Prime HoldingsSM Prime Holdings opened its first shopping mall outside Manila in November 1993 in Cebu City . With a gross floor area of 161,562 sqm., it easily became the largest shopping mall in Cebu and the third largest in the country behind two other SM malls in Manila. And the malling phenomenon has caught the Cebuanos since then.

After over a decade of robust growth in the malling business in Cebu, particularly in the retail industry, SM Prime Holdings is set to build an annex building to accommodate more tenants who want to locate inside the mall. With the additional 104,000 sqm. of mall space, SM City Cebu will have a total floor area of 265,562 sqm. becoming the 4th largest among SM malls and in the country. It hopes to accommodate 168 more store slots and a 3-level parking slots to the new building upon completion.
