Marine Protected Areas in Cebu

The country’s marine ecosystems are in dire need of protection because of the threat posed by numerous anthropogenic impacts. That includes all kinds of fishing destructive to the life of most marine organisms not suitable for human consumption such as corals, algae, seagrass, and planktons.

The most favored and potentially beneficial intervention to manage coral reef resources is through marine protected areas (MPAs) with its “regulated activities zones” and “no take zones”.

Cebu is astride the country’s richest marine biodiversity - the Central Visayas area. Encompassing the waters of four provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental, this area is home to over 220 marine protected areas (MPAs) in the form of sanctuaries, parks, and reserves.
