WW II Pershing Cap Found Off Talisay Beach

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Nobody knows who exactly owned it but it was an interesting find nonetheless. The Pershing cap was found by a certified scuba diver in Lagundi Reef last March 5, less than a kilometer off Talisay City shore in barangay Poblacion. Pershing was the name of a controversial army officer in the United States Army who once fought for the United States during the Philippine-American war and later promoted to Brigadier General and once served as Commander of Fort McKinley, near Manila from 1909 to 1912.

The vintage find was considered a priceless artifact from the WW II. A group of scuba divers were cleaning the sea bottoms of Talisay in March 5 for the annual clean-up drive, an environmental project of the local government of Talisay City , when the cap was found lodged between coral branches. The cap was later identified as a Pershing cap which the American soldiers wore during the WW II.

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Seasoned triathletes Nonoy Jopson and Grace Bascon emerged victors in their respective divisions yesterday in the just concluded National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) series in Danao City.

Jopson owns the national record in Philippine triathlon and he proved it anew yesterday as he clocked the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run event in one hour and 52.55 minutes to grab the men’s elite title in the country’s prestigious triathlon event. Grace Bascon, meanwhile, ruled the distaff side in 2:28:06.

Two lesser-known triathletes gave Jopson a challenge by trailing him all throughout the race. Neil Catiil finished the grueling event in 1:59.54 while Rene Joseph Balbuena trailed behind to cap the third place in 2:00.19.
