S. Korean Hotel Chain To Expand in Cebu

Cebu has been the most preferred tourist destination in the Philippines for many years, especially for East Asian travellers. In past years, Japanese tourists dominated the number of foreign visitors to Cebu until two years ago when Korean tourists overtook them and have taken the position ever since.

Cebu, as a tourist destination, has been growing at a faster rate than any other places in the country that resulted to accommodation shortage in recent years prompting the Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 to encourage local and forein investors to build more hotels and related facilities to accommodate the growing tourist arrivals in the province.

Some of the foreign investors who are now taking heed of the agency’s call are mostly Korean businessmen. The most recent Korean investor to enter the hotel industry is the Imperial Palace Hotel chain. The Seoul-based hotel chain will sign a deal to build a hotel in the Philippines, particularly in Mactan Island, becoming the first South Korean hotel chain to branch out overseas.

The Imperial Palace Hotel is the latest addition to Korean-owned hotel and residential investments in Cebu in less than a year. The other projects include a five-star resort hotel and condominium complex in Marigondon, (also in Mactan) and a high-rise condomium project at Cebu Business Park.

The agreement, to be signed today with Manila’s BXT Corp., calls for the construction of a 15-story 668-room hotel on Mactan Island in the central part of the Philippines by October next year.

I just wanna clarify if that Korean 7 tower condotel that will be built in Marigondon Lapu Lapu City is different from this project coz in other reports, the 7 condotel 7 towers to be built in Marigonon is “the Imperial polis” while this new S Korean hotel to be built is “the Imperial Palace Hotel chain”… Both have Imperial and I’m doubtful if these projects is only 1.

thanks slerz for reading the blog.

at first i thought the two hotel projects are just one and the same. but if you try to read through the first article and this article, there’s something between them that would give us a clue that they are two different projects, although it’s still possible.

the most notable of which is that in the first article “Koreans Push Through Five-Star Resort Hotel Project,” if you notice, the investors are negotiating with international hotel chains such as marriott, intercon, and sheraton to manage the hotel.

in this article, it stated clearly that it is a korean hotel chain, specifically the imperial palace hotel in seoul, that is planning to build a hotel, quite incidentally, also in marigondon, as its first branch overseas.

if it were the branch of imperial palace hotel of korea which is a proprietary name, then why negotiate with other competitors to manage their own property?

do you think shangri-la hotel will negotiate with hilton hotel to manage its hotel property once it opens in boracay this year?

but there seems to be one major common denominator between them that would convince us that these projects are just one and the same: both hotel projects have 668 rooms.

that is something we will find out once either of these projects start construction.

pls check out this blog daily for any update of these projects and cebu development in general.

ah ok, I hope that these are two different projects coz during it’s signing the other day of the IMperial Palace Hotel, in any news article it didn’t mention 7 tower condotel but only 15 storey hotel and also since then that 7 tower Korean project didn’t mention 15story hotel in any of news articles and if they’ve decided to change their plans from 7 tower to a 15 storey hotel, they shoud have stated it but they didn’t. anyway thanks for the reply.

I posted your reply in our forum discussion in SSC (Slyscrapercity). I hope you can also join us in our Cebu thread if you haven’t yet. Thanks
